CARBY ON 3F HELP!
1) Just got the standard carby on the 3F atm but i think it is having some problems, when you start the car it idles fine but once you put it into gear and take off it starts to run a bit rough and then wont idle it just stalls.
I have replaced plugs, checked the leads, sprayed the inside of the carby with carby clean while the engine is running but to no avail.
It also backfires or exhaust pops when slowing down.
It was running fine until i went up a very rocky hill climb, started to boumce a little so i backed off and reversed back down. Since then it hasnt run the same.
Any ideas on what it could be?
2) I think it is a carby issue, and if i get to the stage where i have to rebuild it i would prob get a new one. $300 bucks. Or i would think of a Holly
Anyone had luck with a holly setup?

Are you running LPG? I had similar problems when i had the old boat anchor 3f, it doesn't sound like a carby problem, it sounds like a timing problem. Have you checked the timing? when did you last change the points in the dinosaur motor? The problems i had was points and i got the dizzy recurved and all good again (if you can call a 3f good) as you can tell i have nothing nice to say about those heavy POS 3f fuel eaters.
I think you will find the points are closed up and aren't able to fully advance and as a result it coughs and farts because 3f's like to annoy you.
If funds permit look at changing motors at some stage, you will never regret it, aspecially when you can buy an injected 5ltr for $1250 with computer loom and sometimes if your lucky a auto to boot aswell.

oh boy, what can i say about the 3f (i have already chucked it out about 2 years ago), every 5000kms I had to change the points , every hill climb was so painfull, it would stall and do all sorts of sh!t...
I had the same problem as u, if the timing and points were not right, it would just spit and fart.

problem fixed i think, hope.
Pulled the distributor out, sanded down the rotor contacts with scotch brite, cleaned out the inner of the dizzy with solvent, checked the points cleaned the leg of the dizzy. refitted and adjusted the timing.
All works good for now.
I will confirm if its still working tomorrow

3F...
I've got a 62 with a 3f in it. For about 4 years now I've been putting up with problem after problem that I can't find -
1. Mornings are a nightmare, it coughs splatters and kangaroo hops down the road
2. As soon as it it smells some water, it simply dies
3. Averages about 21 -23 litres per 100 k's
4. Had the carby rebuilt twice (still no difference)
5. Bought about 10 sets of points and rotors (still did'nt fix the problems)
6. Bought my own dwell angle multimeter to set up the point gap (Not much difference)
7. Had the coil checked (not the problem)
8. Throttle cable tends to stick
9. Conks out whilst going up a steep incline
10. Put a surge tank on it with a second feed pump to give it all the fuel I thought it needed (Waste of time and money)
11. Probably a number of vacuum leaks...
Just bought a 12 HT .... and turns out I've got a 3f for sale... good condition only driven on Sundays to church (250 000 k's) make an offer!

Hi All
I hope this isnt off-topic..
I recently got my LPG/PETROL 3F serviced at a local LPG specialist.
Since coming back I have the following issue.
it runs on (after turning it off) on petrol
Pings on petrol badly
on lpg it doesnt ping, and doesnt run on.
Didn't do this before the service, they are telling me its carbon build up, but it wasnt doing this before the service and they refuse to check the timing.
being as useless as I am, I can't check the timing, is their someone in brissy willing to help set it correctly for me? for a carton? or similar
Thanks
Matt

keep ya carton, but a cheap timing light and a 10mm spanner, remove the cover of the bell housing hook the timing light up (+, - and no. 1 spark lead) start it and check the timing or just retard the dizzy a bit (turn it the same way as the rotor button turns) (move it 3mm or so and drive) and find the best spot without pinging or running hot.
gas has a much higher octane so can handle higher timing but on fuel it will ping and run on if too advanced.
the gas people probably wound some timing in so it feels nice and repsonsive when you drive it away and think wow, that $400 i spent for a "tune up" was worth it ) sorry!

I have the same problems but i just carry a set of feeler guages and a flat screwdriver everywhere now.The timing is just trial and error move timing and drive if it pings retard it a bit until it dosent.I've got my 3F goin pretty good at the moment revs to 5500 and a shit load of tourqe love it on the climbs but is heavy on the juice.also had the problem with a blocked plunger in the carby stripped it and cleaned with nulon carby cleaner (the stuff that takes ya skin off) and goes awesome now.If ya still have dramas drop us a line and i will talk ya through it.
Re: 3F...
hey ben, couldnt be the same one i got from ya... runs fantastic, used my gas carbie and manifolds, yours where all cracked, but its all in and crusin now,,,, thanks again..Cruza62 wrote:I've got a 62 with a 3f in it.
