hey guys
my gear box in my 91 diesel lux is dying, i have heard that the r series are a stronger box, if i where to buy one, is it hard to pull out the old box and put the new box in??i know they are heavy buy if a few blokes helped is it easy??
pittstop 4x4 want 2500 for them to reco it and i cant afford that

I just went through this dilemma dude.
It happens....alot. I am on my 3rd G52.
Mind you I have been driving the same rig for 6 years.
And it gets driven nearly every weekend I can.
Upside to G52s is they are CHEAP and bolt right in obviously.
downside Not so strong tho.
The R151F out of the 4-runner is completely different.
It uses a CHAIN driven transfer case instead of a GEAR drive like now.
You cannot get gears OR DUALS if you have a chain drive transfer.
you can change to a gear drive, but this is even more $$$.
So while the box may be stronger, your options are less for gears.
not to mention the cost of an R151F in the first place.
As for changing the box over yourself. go to Kennards and hire a
transmission floor jack with the chains. Chain it to the jack and
lower it out. My one even had tilt adjustment for refitting the new box.
Took about 6 hours all up.
In hindsight, you should really replace the throw-out bearing,
the front and rear gearbox seal and all the gaskets with gasket goo.

Worst case, if you want a stronger gearbox, Marks heavy duty unit is $2650, and allows you to keep your gear driven transfer. ChevTorque in WA should offer something similar. Basically the same as R150/R151, but different ratios.
R150/R151 will require different bellhousing (Marks might offer an adapter plate, or it may be possible to redrill your current bellhousing?????), plus another adapter to keep your current t-case ($550 or so from Marks).
In saying that, with a standard motor, I wouldn't have thought you'd have any dramas with a G52. Maybe I'm a bit lighter on the throttle than others here.

The gearbox jack was awesome. Probably going to buy one myself.
The G52 is not weak if it is driven the way it was intended for. eg. It aint no drag car so tearing off at the lights is no good for it. It is not a superfast fully sic boosted wrexy that needs to gas it up the mainy so everyone looks at it. Little things like letting it warm up before you drive it not crunching gears, regular oil level checks and oil changes can do it a world of good and make it last its intended lifespan. Toyo truck has done a good 100 000 plus kms on his g52 and that is with twin lockers and he has driven some pretty funky stuff. In saying that if i paid 900 to 1250 every 125 000 kms or so to rebuild a gbox that it is a pretty intricate part of the car and you are a keen wheeler then i say money well spent if it keeps you reliable.
By the way who quoted you $2500 to rebuild a G52? Seems a bit pricey.
I was thinking of rebuilding mine before i undertook the commodore conversion on the runner. Most expensive i found was about $1250 and that was if it was completely routed.
There is one floating around on ebay for $900 Changeover. Search hilux gbox.

after my second g52 shit itself i have now got r150 box in mine. and its got its pros and cons. much stronger obviously and just heaps smoother then my old g52. but like earlier stated its got chain driven transfer which is not very friendly for mods. also, the transfer is electrically controlled which has its pitfalls. but if i had my time again i would do it the same. except maybe get the adapter from marks and use gear driven transfer. my r150 was $1100 from wreckers with warranty so it pays to look around. just my 2 cents

Be carful on the terms when getting and exchange manual
Rebuilt = what ever needed to get it going again eg 1 bearing
Reconditioned = All seals gaskets bearings and syncros to and australian standard
Best way to see what you are getting is ask for and itemised quote so you can see what you are getting and if some one will not do it what are you really getting?
