Nissan 3L Patrol vs the 4.2L

Post by neil_blue »

Hi
Just like to find out what people think of the 3L Patrol vs the 4.2L. Although now Nissan has stopped making the 4.2L it'll be hard to find a new one
what's the good and bad of the 3L model

cheers

Dude, not trying to be nasty, but have a quick search, there will be more than enough posts you can find to make you think otherwise.

Basically, in short, over worked motor, stressed by being in a big, heavy car. Nissan supposedly fixed the early grenading problems, however the potential is still there. awill4x4 had compiled a list of owners with blown engines, and their respective km readings.
Cheers,
Dan.

A 253?? Thats like the Holden equivalent of the 2.8 you're getting rid of, If your going to that effort put a 308 in at least! Either way you'll need a gearbox and transfere case.
The 4.2 will be less hassle in regards to engineering(emissions), just get an engine of the same vintage, lift it and put some big wheels on to improve the gearing due to the 4.6:1 ratios.

My old man's got a 2003 st 3L TD. He tows a 3 tonne 21 foot caravan hell west and crooked. The only thing he's done is an alternator. It's got over 110k's on it mostly towing. Seems to me the earlier problems were fixed.

there are a lot of reasons why those 3l motors died. granted nissan handling of the nissan caused faults doesn't help one bit.

there are a lot of them running around with no problems.

there is also a few mods you can do to help with reliability.
you just have to rememeber they are a small high performance motor, not a big old fashion slug. they need to be treated as such.
