Rear diff spool
Rear diff spool
Came across this site in search of a 26 spline spool
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/2206,98 ... pools.html
Its the fourth product item #91048603
Just wondering if it will fit my rear zook diff??
Is it cheap considering it will cost to post and the exchange rate (i emailed asking for prices in $AU and postage to my town)
Does anyone know where i can get a cheap spool from if this wont fit or works out to be to expensive??
also is it true rx7's have a 26 spline rear end if so would a spool for one of these fit a zook??
Thanks in advance Trent

Cheap spool
If its cheap you're after why not weld the centre. Same result as a spool and just as (il)legal. LowRangeOffroad sell mini spools and lockers from US$109

Re: Cheap spool
X2 If you want cheap, welded is where its at. My zook will be running welded rear and air locked front.want33s wrote:If its cheap you're after why not weld the centre. Same result as a spool and just as (il)legal. LowRangeOffroad sell mini spools and lockers from US$109

If you cant do the welding yourself I would guess that any welder would do it as a cashy or for a 6pack etc.
Its fairly straightforward, you just need some 6-8mm plate to bridge the gears and away you go. Plenty of write ups on here too.

The low range offroad minispool is made by Trail Tough as far as I am aware, and is the only one avialable.
I have welded a heap of sierra diffs and never really had a problem. However, if you don't like it or break it you have a bit of a problem to overcome, which is one advantage of the spool.
One of the issues with welded centres is when they go, they can actually break the whole centre in 1/2 which leads to untold diff carnage.
I have a trail tough spool waiting to go in the 5.12 vitara rear diff that's going in my LWB.
Steve.
PS I agree Mick, I don't really support welded front diffs. they are a massive PITA.

I disagree sanger, we have a few guys here with PS and welded fronts and their maneuverability still sucks even though they can turn the wheel, the car still pushes.
Yes, it is much better than manual steering, but it is still a poor (although cheap) solution for a front locker.

I know alot of people have sucsess with welded rears and Ive never actualy had a welded rear just an arb that wouldnt disengage (my fault not bagging them) and running 30s ( gee that was along time ago ) I twisted both rear axle splines and wore the rear tyres down very quick.
I also had a welded front for awhile. It was great when I was young enough to get in and out all the time to lock and unlock the hubs whenever I wanted to turn.
But now Im a little older its not as fun so I took it out. Sure I dont have the same awsome ability off road but I still have a ball.

Instead of welding/destroying the carrier I just welded the side gears, ie: weld 2 gear spaces, leave 2, weld 2 etc. When it goes together it jams with spider gears.I've done 3 that way and none have broken.Mine is only 2 stroke but a mate broke 3 axles and the diff is still going.Another mate has a CA 18 in a Sierra with 31" claws and also no probs.
It's basically no stronger then welding the whole lot up.
They can last very well- a bunch of mine lasted for years.
