might be buying a jeep

Post by stu »

thinking of buying a wrangler looking for about a 2000 model for around $25000 - grey would be nice too

anything i should keep in mind when looking for one, things to check for which would be considered as an inherited problem from a jeep.

Generally they are pretty good and you won't find many inhert problems unless they've had poorly thought out mods done. Soft top zippers are probabl;y one area worth careful inspection as they commonly fail to zip - but they can be fixed pretty easily too ;)
How About I C&P some trading post ads with comments?

Jeep Wrangler 1999 4WD black soft top 4L 5 speed manual, 36000kms, front and side bars, alloys, sound bar, towbar, full service history, 9 months reg, never been off road, AHJ-15M excellent condition $24999 negotiable OATLEY 0413-54 3002 milesan@netspace.net.au Weekend am viewing only
Never offroad - wellthis dude didn't deserve to own a Jeep :finger:......Sound bars are a good inclusion becuase it provides you with an overhead interior light which you wouldn't have otherwise. Front & Side bars probably means those poofy tube bumpers.....remove & onsell ASAP as these rob a heap of ground clearance and aren't real strong - definately mostly for looks....Summary sounds like a clean unit

JEEP WRANGLER 1999 Manual soft top, chrome wheels/bars, rego 11/2003, excellent condition, $26500 negotiable, WJD-130 EMU PLAINS 0416-11 6224
Bit expensive & refer above on the chrome thing...

Jeep Wrangler 1999, soft top, black, rego 12/2003, 55000kms, $25000, XVU-929 NOWRA 0425-28 2383
Moderately low milage... So stock this guy doesn't know what to do with it......not enough info probably worth a look see becuase probably never played with it

JEEP WRANGLER 1998 Immaculate condition, only 17000kms, CD, side steps, AGH-97U, $24500 or near offer PYMBLE 02-9449 5049
I know ya said 2000 model - but this sucker only has 17k...really only serviced twice.......Obviously bought it and then realised that it didn't seat his 7 boyfriends and promptly wants to sell it....worthy of a look

JEEP WRANGLER 2000 model manual sport, only 36000kms, one owner log books, black, realistically priced at only $24999, AJC-28S. DL-14862, West End Mazda, 590 Church Street NORTH PARRAMATTA 02-9630 7900
This one sounds nearly exactly what you asked about.....

JEEP WRANGLER 2001 16000kms, soft top manual, blue, air conditioned, mags, bull-bar, towbar, side steps, 3in suspension lift, $28500, XPQ-747 SUTHERLAND 0410-46 1281
Ok it's a bit newer and slightly more......But in this case I'd be asking what brand of suspension lift, who fitted it, was a SYE fitted or the Transfer case just dropped (now where near as desirable).....Ask about the "bull bar"...What brand, is it a winch or non-winch (you want winch naturally)...Be aware that the ARB is the most common, but will need trimming to fit 33's or bigger....TJM or ECB goes without saying is CRAP...BTW Tow bars are bloody good on TJ's as the really help protect the vunerable fuel tank....But ask if it's a puny 1¼" hitch or 2"

JEEP WRANGLER BLACK, sports Extreme chrome bars, air compressor, alloys, 33 BFG mud, lift kit, CD, air, SRS, 12 months reg, $25000 YJE-740 JESMOND 0417-21 2073
Ok we obviously have NFI what year...BUT if he's running 33's he should have had the diff ratios done (VERY good if they have - stupid if not)....If it's got onbaord air, dones it have ARB lockers? (again this comes back to the lower diff gears). Lift kit - ask size, brand, who fitted, and what was done to fix the driveline vibs.....the more they can tell you the better....SRS - what a tosser dual airbags are standard on ALL TJ's...And WTF is "extreme Chrome bars  ...

So ends todays samples.....Now this brings me you will see Power steer, Airbags and even limited slip diffs listed as features - these are standard....Air cond is extra as are sound bars....BTW both the A/C and sounds bars are VERY good extras to have already fitted.....

Anyways that help at all??

wooders you a god damn legend when it comes to an informative reply, However i would have to look at the trading post up my way, sunny QLD.

I like to get a procomp 4" lift and a 2" body lift. I have been told that will mean i have to get a x-case lift too. Secondly you mentioned about a different r&p for the diffs for the 33's. i have also been told that you can get the front dana 30 (i think) replaced with another similar axel to the rear, dana 40, 44. $#%ed if i know. Any idea on tha twould be the cost. general ball park figures would be fine. Also can you get a rockhopper for a jeep.

The idae was i'd get a load from the bank for the cost of the jeep then sell my spook and use those funds to amend the jeep and pay off the load after including extra money i have in the bank.

Wooders, you have too much time on your hands :P
Stu
Probably not too much you'd need to worry about if you bought a show pony that's never been wheeled. If you're looking at wheeling, the doors on the soft top are great for hangin out to see your front wheels cause they're cut. Sound bar is a good additive and don't dismiss the idea of A/C in a soft top either, it bloody works ! We have a 97 TJ that's just reaching 92k and we haven't had any major dramas with it.

Ok Stu - Straight from today's QLD trading post.....

JEEP RANGLER RENAGADE, 1998, white hardtop, tan/green interior, manual, air cond, power steer, 6 stack CD, 115,000klms, 5spd 4Ltr, S/Cert, excellent cond, must sell, ONO -$24000 Cannon Hill (0417) 005 613 or 3890 0932
Bit high in the milage....The Renegade get the full console and sound bar stock, also gets full doors and hardtop - both of which can still be removed faily easily - infact I've wished for a hardtop a few times...... Although not low mileage and a bit older the Renegade did sell for like $10k extra when new......so it sounds like a reasonable unit.

JEEP WRANGLER 1997 5 speed, rego, RWC, tow bar, bull bar, p/s, a/c, alarm, new oversize BFG's, central locking, soft top, 2 1/2 inch lift, series 2000 shocks, mags, tubular bars all round, CD, spotlights, air horns, VGC -$23000 TOWNSVILLE (0416) 086 828
Hmmm 2000 series shockies - not particulalrly popular, and hence probably has a TJM lift and TJM bumper. No indication about the actual size of the BFG's and again those bumper all round.....Think you could do better...

JEEP WRANGLER 1997 4L, fully optioned, alloy mags, bull-bar, side steps, CD player, dark green, only done 79,000kms, registered, RWC, or near offer -$23990 TOWNSVILLE (0413) 323 481
TOO expensive

JEEP WRANGLER 1998 Black, grey interior, soft top, chrome mags, raised 2inches, CD player, chrome front rear and side bars, p/s, towbar, excellent cond, 73,000klms, price negotiable at -$25000 Upper Kedron 3351 2695 or (0402) 138 096
Usual question about the lift, and bars......probably not a bad unit - but not standout value...

JEEP WRANGLER 1997 black soft top 4.0ltr 5sp manual 89900 kms fully decked out!( ) chrome bars, new Pirelli tyres, subwoofer, amp, soundbar, Pioneer headunit, rustproofed, towbar (chrome), airhorn, rego to 01/04 - a real head turner! PC - $27640 Ferny Hills (0413) 584 953
Ring this guy up and ask if you can enjoy some of his drugs... :finger:

JEEP WRANGLER SPORTS - 1998 Red, with white soft top roof, 60,000klms, air cond, pwr steering, cruise control, auto, Sounds Bar speakers, beige interior, car bra, custom made car cover, side step, front & rear chrome bars, 6 months rego, regular service, log book, always garaged, 1 lady owner, would suit new buyer, Perfect Condition
-$27900 Paddington 3511 6252
Jezz ya get a pretty sheet selection up there

JEEP WRANGLER TJ 12/2001, black, softtop, manual, 22,000kms, air conditioning power steering, new car warranty, rust proofed, excellent condition -$29000 KANGAROO POINT (0407) 286 375
Much better - but outside the $$range you were looking

Jeep Wrangler, soft top, 2001, red, 2in lift kit, Old Man Emu shocks, 9000lb Warne winch, bullbar, factory jeep side steps, towbar, SRS airbags, ono -$28500 Auchenflower (0438) 710 787
Now we're getting better. I know it's slightly above your range but with those extras it's probably well worth a look see.....Remember if you want a bigger lift you can do things like throw a set of coil spacers in ther (can be done cheap) or just sell this "kit" to fund the other kit....etc..

JEEP WRANGLER TJ 4WD 1997 Red hard top 4.0ltr 5sp manual 60000 kms A/C, Tow Bar, Nudge Bar, ProComp lift, air compressor, Jet Chip, receipts EC -$24990 Toowoomba 4632 5805
Ok older I know. the downside of this model is that it has the older slide style heater controls and in the engine bay the alternator is located lower. Ask about the size of the ProComp lift. AirCompressor - hmm wonder if it's got lockers/ratios done....if this one has lockers/ratios - then it would be my pick of the units in this weeks TP, if not then I'd be looking at the previous unit....actually nah I think the previous one is better regardless

Wooders other blabberings

Dana30
Don't listen to bloody BJ, t's a good little diff. PLENTY of guys are running 35" tyres without breaking it. However if you think you'll go bigger than 35s then it I would suggest you don't spend a cent on the D30, and instead geta bigger diff.....But remember the D44 really only provides bigger R&P over the D30 - they run the same sized uni joints - which is usually the first point of failure - not the R&P.....The D30 also gives better ground clearance.....In many ways IMHO the D30 is an underrated little performer....

Ratios
Stock TJ's in Aust get 3.07 diff ratios - these suck at the best of times...the best ratio depends on your desire tyre size and the transmission type your choose....Basing on say 35" rubber which would be prefect under a 4" Susp & 2"BL...Auto I'd suggest 4.10, manual tranny I'd suggest 4.56....but if you won't see many hwy milage then I'd say Auto 4.56, manual 4.88.....Just make sure you do your lockers at the same time. If you go ARB lockers budget about $4500 for both lockers, ratios compressor and fitting....Detroits will be cheaper.

T/case crawler gears
Teraflex do make a crawler ratio of 4:1 for the NV231 transfer case - allow about $2500 for the kit. Also you would want to be fitting a SYE at the same time so this adds about $1000 to that....Plus about $500 for a new driveshaft....Not cheap huh...Personally if you can bear slightly higher rpm on teh highway I'd simply go slightly deeper diffratios and keep the reasonable stock t/case ratio of 2.72. Also be aware that the Teralow does have a bit of a reputation for being a bit louder - but we're men so it will help drown out the woman's whine.....
Another alternative - my personal prefenence would be to not spend a cent on the NV231, and instead buy an Atlas - Sure is pricey at about $5k but it give deeper ratios and SYE in one hit plus is MILES stronger.
One thing I haven't mentioned is running big tyres on teh NV231 can over time lead to a stretched T/case chain (Atlas is Gear driven)...there IS an upgrade to a heavier duty chain available - but since I haven't performed this operation I can't advise on the $$$damage. BTW I also run the stock t/case ratios and find them plenty deep enough for 95% of the trails time....infact it can allow slightly better wheel speed in lowrange whioch is a benefit in some terrain (eg mud)...

Lift
Ther are about 20 different companies currently producing lift kits for TJ's....then there is an untold number that have been just custom mixed&matched....Mine is one of those.....
The ProComp kit isn't a bad mainstream kit - but I'd recommend you avoid the fixed length control arms - these do not allow for minor adjustments to the pinion angles for ideal tuning out of driveline vibs, also most non-adjustable arms articulate less and place more strees on the realively weak factory mounts.
There's WAY too much to lifts to put in a little bit here - I really suggest you have a look and then ask questions and we'll try and give feedback, opinions, answers etc......(actually the same could be said for lockers)....

Yeah maybe I do have a biot too much time on my hands....jealous? :finger: ....Time for coffee.... :!:
