Auto gear box trans oil

Post by zagan »

Just wondering what trans oil, people are using in their diesel auto box.

Mine is slipping a little bit and I've been reading up about torque converters and using mineral oil can help to reduce the slipping but it's stall limit will be lower but using synth oil can raise the stall limit but might allow for slipping.

The manual says dexron III, what are other people using in their auto box?

DexronIII is red in colour I've got red stuff in the box now, just wondering if I swapped to something that help to reduce the slipping might be better.

The first thing I'd do is get a shift kit fitted as that will reduce the slippage a lot. Or get a valve body from Wholesale Automatics.
I ran mine when I still had the TD42 (turboed, 21psi, intercooled etc) with a shift kit and used Redline Trans fluid. Really expensive shit but well worth the money and it last about 10 times longer than standard fluid. So is not that expensive over the life of the trans.
I did 1 season (4 comps and all other use) then got the trans rebuilt (due to old age) I then did a full season using Redline fluid and have then had the trans stripped and modified to suit the V8. It was still in perfect condition. I'm now using the same trans (soon to have a Wholesale Automatics manual valve body) behind a turboed VH45 ie about double the HP of the turboed TD42 I did have.
I now wouldn't put anything else in a trans even though it costs a shit load. ie over $20 per litre! x 11
93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)
