hey guys,

first of all, im new to the forum, so g'day!

I'm looking into getting myself a 4wd, i dont know a great deal about em so sorry if these q's are a little on the simple side... :)

i'm tossing up wether to get a rocky or a feroza with the aim of having a weekend getaway 4wd i can take to moreton or straddie while still using it as a daily driver (does this sound like a good idea?), so heres my questions

the rocky
its a 2.8L turbo diesel right? what are the engine specs? 6cyl dohc or sohc? what sort of power and torque does it make standard? can someone tell me about the driveline? i cant seem to find a great deal of detailed information, are they good to go to the beach stock standard?

the feroza
its a 1.6L? i'm not sure, so again, what sort of power and torque would you expect? also any other information you guys have on ferozas would be great

i'm looking to spend around 10k to purchase one or the other, does this sound like a good purchase price for around a 1990 onward.

also, what are your personal preferences/sugestions?

finally, are either of these 4wds grey imports? just asking cause i know a few are, it doesnt really bother me, im used to paying the high premium as i have grey import now, i guess i'd just like insurance to be cheaper. ;)

Hi Scooby,
From what you can see the majority of items on this forum relate to ferozas or Rockys as they are called in the US.

Don't be misled, when someone from the US talks about their Rocky they are talking about a Feroza.

As you said, the Rocky's come in two variants 2.8L diesel, with a choice of normally aspirated, turbo, or turbo intercooled. The other type is a normal petrol engined Rocky. The Rocky does not have IFS but comes with solid front and rear axles.

Both are great. I have a Rocky with > 490,000 Kms on the clock and the donk has still not been touched. Don't know of to many Feroza's around that could boast that. It is definately not as comfortable as a Feroza but I like it and it is ultra reliable. No electronics to stuff you up and for me it is a great hack vehicle.

my 89 Feroza has 334,000 k's on it....... The head has been done, but I havent touched th erest of it, and goes a treat.

I've heard of a Feroza somewhere near where I work that's done over 400000km (same mechanic works on mine and told me about it.)

Scooby some more info on your original questions:

Feroza 1.6l 16 valve EFI. 70kW and ~130Nm (from memory) and weigh around 1200kg. Available in 5spd manual or auto (rare). First made around '89, widetrack Feroza II introduced around '92 and sold alongside normal Feroza for a while. I think production ceased around '97?

Rocky diesel engine (N/A and turbo) only for later models. Not sure on power output, but weigh over 1700kg. Generally dearer than a Feroza secondhand and harder to find. Early models were a narrow track, later models (with IFS?) were wider. Later models also have a resin roof like the Feroza. LWB and SWB were sold I believe, plus I've seen some utes (cab chassis) too.

Try looking on www.redbook.com.au for more info on different models.

4WD Monthly did a review on used Ferozas about two months ago- gave them a big thumbs up with no major problems of note.

I've never heard of any grey import Feroza or Rockys but they may be out there.

I use my Feroza as a daily driver and for weekend use off road. Being lighter than the Rocky they would probably be the better choice for what you listed. The only downside is the small boot behind the rear seats- roof racks and a luggage pod on the roof can help with that problem- or unbolt the rear seats if you don't need them and you'll have stacks of room.

Well beleive me finding one at the moment under $10k with air is becoming a hard task at the moment they are scarce as hens teeth

I have thought about that but I beleive there is something out there for me :) It is just a major hassle getting that done after I have bought it and I probably wouldn't have the cash to do it

Rick thanks for clearing the feroza/US rocky thing up for me, that was confusing me :? (which isnt really hard heheh :D )
mmm, thats a shame to hear about rockys being hard to find murcod, but i guess i'll keep looking for now, tho i'll test drive some ferozas too (wish you could take em to the beach for a test... :) )
QLDGAL seems you're in the same spot as me :) i doubt i'll be buying for a while but im still looking around. if i see anything i'll post it up

I think a turbo rocky is about 74 kw intercooled is a bit more non turbo is 54kw gross weight for diesels from 1,805 to 2,020kg Australian models ,english ones are slightly hevier,
And close to 200kg hevier than petrol of the same model.
but thats going from an older manual this may of changed a bit with newer models.
may give u a rough guide though.

Hey QLDGal, would you be interested in picking up a Feroza from Sydeny? I have a mate who buys cars for a living....could get him to keep a look out...would prolly be MUCH cheaper even with a flight to Sdyney and petrol back home...

Many people are saying around $10,000, but I've had my 1993 Feroza SXII advertised (signs on window) for $8000 for a fortnight and haven't had a buyer. It has tinted windows, CD player and alarm/immobiliser. It's done 175.000Kms and only has a few scratches to the body.
