Busted 2003 Hilux Diff Centre

Looking for some advice with regard to my 2003 v6 hilux dual cab 4.1 lsd rear diff

At the end of my play time on the weekend a non rythmic clunking was coming from the rear diff. Disconnected the tailshaft and drove out to a waiting car trailer. Crown wheel is busted and now looking at replacing the diff centre.

theories with regard to fixing it is:
a. replace with either a second or new hilux diff
b. replace with a patrol or landcrusier diff
c. and a mate's suggestion fitting an airlocker.

Any thoughts as to what would work best?

I busted my 03 hilux v6 diff too, 4.1:1, when she was 20,000km old. Luckily I managed to get it under warranty, but now that shes out of warrantee and if the same were to happen, I'd be looking at a second hand diff centre persoanally.

Genuine diff centre costs heaps so your better off either getting one out of a surf or hilux, other than than a new aftermarket one like marks adaptors or some off ebay, about 500bux worth for a crown and pinion.

Second hand diff is the cheap way out, but you will most likely break it again if you dont modify your driving habits.

Pootrol or Cruiser diff isnt a bad idea but can get expensive if you cant do all the fabwork yourself. And although they are strong they will massively decrese your ground clearance under the pumpkin as well.

The locker, in my opinion, is the way to go. You wont be bouncing up tracks at full throttle waiting for the diff to drop its lunch again. You can cruise up rough tracks with ease.

Go a secon hand one, shop around is my advice i just picked one up with 70 thou k on it for 400. Yeh and modify your driving habbits. As soon as you lose traction and/or it starts hopping and wanting to play leap frog with the truck in front give up, thats when you do the damage.. well thats what i find usually causes it. or your ratio's are no good for your tires. My 2 c, hopw this helps

how you'd break your REAR diff is beyond me as they are pretty damn tough, one of the toughest diffs on the market in the Toyo stable!

Front diff is different. Everybodies brokena fron diff in the IFS hilux at some point in time.

I replaced my bad LSD in my 03 V6 hilux very early on BEFORE it could break, with an air locker. The LSD was crap anyway. Not as good as Nissans.

Front diff broke and Toyo refused to warrant it (i had a body lift and they claimed large tyres casued the break) without inspecting it first and if they rejected it, Id be up for the exorbadant Toyo hourly rate. Anyway, I went air lockr up front as well, for the security and ultimately the cheaper option of the diff broke again.

one more thing, you said you wanted to repalce the diff centre???

If youve busted the crown wheel and pinion, you only got to replace the ring gear itself and the pinion gear, not the whole diff centre.
