RPM cable

Post by zagan »

Anyone know much about RPM cables from the gearbox?

I've got a problem with mine, it was working perfect and then it basicly stopped and only do wide movements, I was going to take it to nissan as I don't really want to be messing around with the dash, I gave it a go... got so far and thought stuff this and put it all back as it was as I don't really have any idea what I could do to help fix it anyway.

Of late though is seems to be starting to move more freely though not great but was wondering if I changed the gearbox oil would this help free it or something?

or would be just be better to take it to nissan?

I'd like to try and save some cash if I can. :)

i think you are talking about the one that tells you how fast you are going (speedo cable)

but if it is that and its not working maybe the cable has snapted
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set

if its on mq/mk the cable could be to tight or in to sharp of an angle or the small drive on the gearbox end has broken, the cable can be reached from under the dash while driving if you jiggle the cable while moving and the speedo starts to move the cable is in a bad position, you can check hte speedo drive by undoing the small bot, i think they are 6mm bolt in the keeper plate n pulling the drive out, if the rear drive flange has come loose it will creap out n pinch the small drive gear. The gears are UHMDPE or PE or simillar plastic n strips one side of the gear/worm off.
I havent had one of these out for about 12 years but this should be fairly accurate

thanks, I'll look into that.

It's not the speedo but the tacho guage, the RPM cable apprantly runs from the gearbox not the engine.

It's gone dodgy but sorta coming good again.

First of all what model of car/4wd are we talking about?????

Second, I very much doubt the tacho is triggered from the gearbox. Otherwise every time you depressed the clutch the tacho would drop to zero.

A nissan terrano auto gearbox, a TD27T.

I have a factory manual for the R20 mine is the R3M, anyway the R20 RPM cable runs from the gearbox for the auto gearbox, I'm taking it's the same with the R3M.

There's not much different between the motor same size bar an intercooler and a ECU.

I thought it'd be hooked into the motor or something.
