Thickness for a tube bar?????
Hi Guys,
As per previous post i am getting a tube bar; just need some advise.
What thickness of steel should i get it made out of 2mm, 3mm, 5mm...etc.
I want it as light as possible; but it needs to handle the stresses of a high mount winch running of it. Don't want the bloddy thing to bend on first use
Cheers

i am just about to knock up a couple of bars i think i am going to go with 4mm as i think 5 will be to heavy and 3 might be a liitle on the thin side for the bashin we are gunna hand them and then i will be using black pipe for the tube sections which i think is 3mm thick wall.
Will let you know how they turn out.
Good luck with yours.

Gday mate my mates and I all have custom tube bars with high mounts fitted. We have used 5mm tube but 10mm plate steel were the winch bolts to in the middle and brassed the shit out of it. I can put my bar into a tree and winch a car up a hill on it and it has not bent on me yet. But make sure your welds are bloody good cause no matter how thick the steel is if your welds are shit it will still fall apart When you winch. Hope this helps have fun take your time.
P.S. Mandrel bends make it alot nicer finnished product.

dam that would be heavy(BUT DAM STRONG) you would need to put another 2 inch of lift in to compensate.
The one on my rangey is just a ARB non winch bar that i have cut the shit out of so it is just the centre box then cut the top out and put a 4mm plate inside across the front where the winch mounts and then put the tube bar sections on that. It has held up pretty good also had my mates bundy winching up a hill off it.
You are dead right with the mandrel bends makes everything really nice.
And do yourself a favour and use a mig with some grunt.

yeah mate heavy is an understatement but strong they need to be as there winch challenge trucks. I even ass ended an 80 series at 70 kmph I only scratched my fairlead but I wrecked his brand new arb rear bar. Thats what ya get for stopping on a wet wooden one way bridge with 5 other 4x4s behind him the dickhead. What your doing is the easiest way to make a bar and still looks really good. Plus if you want later on you can add scrub rails and stuff like that and you will know what pipe you used to keep it all uniformed and lookin pretty.
