Hi all,
I'm fairly new to all this, but i'll give it a go. Recently scored a 1968, 88" series 2a Landy. I was going to do it up stock, but decided it would cost about the same to go a bit more out there.
It has previously been registered with a holden 179, and so i will stick with it for re-rego purposes. Have already finished doing all the chassis repairs, (usual rear end rott, etc), and have started fixing the firewall. What i need to know is:
Best, and cheapest, way to fix the landrover axle problems?
Do i go toy diffs and housings, or pay for maxidrive builds?
Suspension height, and articulation, safe to do a spring over, or get custom springs, ar do i need to convert to coil?
Are there any disk brake conversion kits, or do i need to start doing the custom thing?
And finally what is the easiest way to put power steering in a series landy?

update
Just a little update on the goings on, i rang four wheel drives yesterday to trace some numbers, because i was having trouble finding gearbox mounts. It turns out that my landy actually has a 1958 series 1 86" chassis and axles/springs. It has a 70's holden 179 engine, a 1968 series 2a gearbox and transfer, and 68 series 2a body.
Have found a wrecked series 3 shorty with good axles, and a couple of other saveable bit's and pieces. Are series three axles any stronger than series 1 or 2? Not salisbury though..bugger!

A '58 will still be a 88", i doubt anyone would have gone through the trouble of fitting a 2a body onto a series 1 chassis, yours sounds like it is one of the first series 2, originally with the 2 litre motor. Holden motor is unlikely to do damage to the axles under normal driving conditions. You can fit later fully floating s3 axles by reaming one drive member, use it as a spacer, then slide in the s3 axle, and fit another drive member, sandwiching the reamed one against the hub. Give me a call on 1300 760 125, and I would be very happy to help. We specialize on series land rovers, absolutely love 'em. Have answers for power steering & disc brake conversions too.
The axles may be marginally stronger, but not to any degree that justifes the effort - the only real upgrade is the brakes from a LWB.
Investigate engineering and look at fitting hilux axles.
For suspension, try and find some 109 wagon springs (the ones with the really thin leaves with about 1- per pack), use military shackles and military shocks.
Be careful with the front drive shaft on the gearbox cross member.
I had to scallop mine in my old S3 because it hit.
Have a look at Slunnies Members threads for Hilux/LC diff conversions (stay spring under and chop your guards) and search for Ben (ISUZUROVER) threads on suspension mods for series.
