I have noticed lately I can't engage 4WD easily unless the vehicle is nearly stopped - seems like the auto-locking hubs aren't working properly. Once in 4WD, everything works normally. Tyre diameters front to rear would be about the same, so I'm guessing its somewhere in the actuation of the hubs.

Does anyone know how to adjust this mechanism? I've tried a search, but I didn't have much luck :oops:

Less than 10km/hr - on this model Rodeo Shiftonthefly enables you to engage 4WD at speeds up to 100km/hr (not that I used to do this).

Previously I was able to hold some gentle pressure on the lever and it would slip in even going as fast as 60-70km/hr. Now it won't. I can only describe it like trying to engage 4WD while moving in a vehicle with manual locking hubs that aren't engaged.

Once it's in 4WD all is sweet, so the hubs must be locking eventually.

are you doing in under acceleration or deceleration?
my paj was like that, i could engage it even at 140 as long as i wasnt accelerating or anything

Normally I would back off the throttle and it would engage 4WD straight away. But now I have to slow lower than 10km and even then it doesn't engage smoothly :?

just a thought, have u checked the oil in the xfer? is it the correct type?

just recently had all the oils changed and it made no difference :cry:

yeah will do, but I still suspect it's somewhere in the mechanism that actuates the auto-locking hubs (vacuum?). Like maybe it isn't actuating early enough for 4WD to engage while on the move? dunno, I'm clutching at straws here

look at the basic stuff first like the oil.
i know that when my oil in the jabber got old it got harder to shift. once i put the new oil in it shifted so much smoother.

have you checked the hoses? maybe one was pulled out when it was at the mechanics?

hmmm we've been in drought for a while, so I'd say around 5 years :scatter:

but seriously I can't really put a time on it because whenever I have had to use 4WD in the last 2 years or so, it's been engaged at low speeds, or stopped (eg. boat ramp or pivot irrigator wheel-track :oops: )

Well the oils all check out OK, and were replaced with the correct grade at service time. Holden dealer tells me it could be a lazy solenoid on the electric front hubs (how can a solenoid be lazy, it either works or it doesn't !!!)

Anyway, the Rodeo is being replaced next week with a new Triton so I guess it's not my problem anymore, although it would be nice to have had it sorted for the next owner :?

198,000km, the lil' ol' Rodeo served me VERY well with virtually no issues :D

No prob, I would tell the potential buyer anyway as I don't believe in trying to hide problems. The only thing wrong apart from this solenoid(?) is the rear brakes shoes probably only have 10,000ks of life left :cool:

I'm sure whoever buys it will be happy even knowing this!!
