Mounting A compressor under bonnet
Has any one done this? im thinking about purchasing a decent compressor and wondering wheres an ideal spot to mount it? The vechile is a HZJ75 ute. Pics would be great if possible and whatdo you rekons a good compressor brand/model?

I mounted mine behind the rear seat of the GQ, had to run heavy power cable anyway for other stuff in the back, so voltage drop isnt an issue.
With a 9 litre tank i can inflate a 33" tyre from 15psi to 35psi in just under a minute.

the bushranger supermax/maxair and the hardmount viair range of compressore are sealed units and canbe mounted in the weather, they have a remote mount airfilter which you run into the cabin, check out //www.bushranger.com.au/compressor_range.php

why not install a BOSS air compressor under the bonnet? if you reckon one electrical compressor shouldn't go under the bonnet, then none should go there.tj81 wrote:I certainly wouldnt mount a BOSS one under the bonnet.

i have installed a BOSS under the bonnet of my cruiser and it was a very tight fit and not completely happy with how it sits, but not keen at all to put such a loud air comp in the cabin with me (and sometimes kids) and gear. apart from a dodgey solenoid when first installed i have had no problems with the set up

1). The BOSS 3/4 is primarily designed and built for Air Suspension applications, and after speaking with a number of Air Suspension dealers etc, i found almost all of them suggested they were mounted inside the vehicle "somewhere"
2). The compressor has a fan cooled engine that requires clean cool air to keep it running and not to overheat. I figured that with the amount of mud, dust and heat in the engine bay, id be sentenceing this particular type of compressor to an early grave. (Ambient Temperatures, higher running temps, mud and dust in the cooling fan etc)
3). I dont find the compressor overly noisy. No more such than having an ARB mounted under the seat your sitting on. Besides in most applications when it will be running (airing up, cleaning with bow off gun, rattle gun etc) I and anyone that would normally be in the vehicle would be outside of it anyway. So in my case i didnt see it as an issue.
4). This compressor also has an external air filter ( yes i ralise it is washable and replaceable) so i figured much as the same reasons as point 2, this would be better in the cabin.
I have no doubt it would most liekely be fine in the engine bay or under the vehicle, however i beleive by putting it where it is, i have eliminated a number of variables that may cause a failure in the unit.

i actually agree with what you are saying. my problem was there was no easy spot to mount in the car, under the seat won't work simply too big. when/if i make a rear drawer system that could be used to mount the air comp as well as cut the sound levels down i will prob move it.

I asked ARB about the fact that when operating it gets mildly warm (no way you can touch the motor - over 100c I reckon) and they are happy to have them do that - reckon it's normal. I have found airflow decreases when it's hot though due to decresed air density.

With a ute, wouldnt behind the cab up under the tray be ideal? Some splash guards and careful locating would keep it clean, it would get cool air and you jsut need to make sure the wire is up to spec.
If you put a regualator on it you can adjust and use without popping you bonnet.
There is a vid kicking round somewhere of the small arb compressor (lockers only) running happily undre 1.5m of water with a snorkel on test.
