BEWARE GU owners !!!
seriously !!!!
Had a set up GU wagon come into work !!
4" lift (22mm coils in rear )
polyairs
rancho,s + in cab
lockers
34",s
winch blah , blah , blah !!!
twin long range tanks !!
nicely set up !!!
except , obviously to tight in the ar$e with the large coils !!
it had broken the top spring mount off of the chassis on the RHR !!!
put a 3" split in the chassis!!
& those that have been under a GU , the fuel lines & brake lines run between the spring plate & the body !!! OUCH !!!
no body lift , so the plate has been pounding the body & pipes !!!!
if you wanna know how much we have been quoted by a panel/chassis shop to fix , PM me !!!!
mainly to chassis shop , cause the back is hangin low now !!!
(& word from the chassis shop , "its not the 1st one they have seen !!!")

did the same thing on both rear ones on my old GQ, welds didnt break, ripped the chassis material out and this was on the telegraph track on cape york.
good idea to weld a brace across the top of the spring mounts from one chassis rail to the other.
i had room to fit a 35x65 rail on the bodylifted GQ.
the ute has a bit of flat across the top and i must get around to bracing that to the cross members [too damn lazy]
good idea to brace it before any big trip as it is a real bugger to fix it out bush....believe me

how did you get around all the brake/fuel plumbing with this??
on the ute i have welded a piece of flat across from the outside top of the spring mounts.
this is not good enough on its own but i just havent got around to putting another two braces at right angles to the flat and bending the braces down to weld to the crossmembers in front and behind the spring mounts.
hope this makes sense.

Very interesting you say that Moose...........
Where the Jabber is being repaired is Kent Engineering in Clayton that specializes in 4x4 insurance repairs.
I was there on monday and they had 2 GU's in there for the same problem.
A spring perch on each vehicle had been bent upwards
Both had 2-3" lift kits with thick arsed coils and one had polyairs.
They had removed the body off both and only the chassis were sitting there so I could see all the fuel/brakelines that run over the perches.
The bloke said they are a weak point and that they straighten then gusset them for the repair.
He said the quality of the factory welds are sh1t, he also said that GQ's don't have this problem as the welds are much better.

GQ's and Maverics have similar problems if thewy have had a hard life. My brothers Maveric had the spring perch crack and come loose on the top of the chassis on the Canning Stock Route. They performed temporary repairs and continued on their trip. Once home, he found that the other side was badly cracked as well. He ended up replacing the rear section of chassis along with some other mods....

Hey Moose I was at Kent's checking out the Jabber repair progress and your gold GU is there.
Rancho shocks, thick arsed yellow coils and bent right side spring perch with a nice crack in the chasis next to it. It had a aftermarket coil spacer on the right coil (about 0.5") and the standard spacer on the left coil ?? Why would you do that ??
The tag had Brown Davis Automotive on it so it's your one alright had front and rear ARB lockers. They had the body off it and the whole chassis/driveline exposed and you can clearly see the bent perch.
Frank.

Had mine plated over the top just recently as the mounts had bent up at 13,500 kms not bad for standard springs and Polyairs . Plates are 12-13mm and bolted using the standard bolt holes. Brake lines are in original bracket but welded under the plate.
Nissan dealer bent them back down for me but am hoping is a warranty job as the removal of the tray and plating was about $800. will with the dealer if it isn't
Luckily we had local mechanic see the problem before it got too bad but should not happen at all. He and others plated theirs before a Gulf trip this year

Never enough of the right sort of tripping
Robbo over the weighbridge at 3.4 but assume higher when fully loaded. have heard figures at 3.8 for a comparo with all the fuel and water and no bending of mounts - so far, for that guy. Rig is pictured on Exploroz members in Victorian list, same id.
Sure it ways more this week with son borrowing it and mate too and the two families gear

hi guys, ive got a 06 gu coil cab ute running 4 inch front and 3 inch rear king springs (waits for laughs) not heavy duty just normal and sits nice and level.
coming back from emu creek on the weekend i noticed a slight vibration and a clunk. later to find a nice few dints in the tailshaft and today i just notice that my rear left hand side upper shock mount has torn off the chassis crossmember. NOT HAPPY JAN vehicle has only traveled 30,000 klms and is still under warranty, but not with teh suspension lift. ( i could put all back to standard as i kept everything but i have modified my lower shock mounts so guessing im wasting my time doing this).
has any one else come across this issue? im running 2 inch 45mm big bore adjustable tough dog shocks. this is the first trip i have turned them up to maximum as i was carrying my 35 creepys in teh tray with camping gear and towing a trailer with moto bikes on it.
in the pics i have taken u can clearly see that the front weld on the mount is not effective its basicaly just sat there looked the part but with no penetration. allowing teh rest to jsut tear away.
wondering if anyone knows a good chassis engineer in brisbane somewhere i can get to have alook, and or advise me. ive got no problems repairing myself just would like it done legal.
Thanks
Andrew
