As spectators we had a great week of watching, playing our games and even touring the local White Cliffs town, where some of the rock looked like they came out of the dinosaur age.

The best way to start is "GIDDYUP!"
That was awsome. I don't know what to start with. The Marshalls, the stages, the spectators, the catering and the competitors were all great.
As we anticipated the event was sooooooooo much better than last year. The organisers have listened and learnt. There was something for everyone. A 6 hour Nav stage, A slalom, speed stages awsome winch walls at night, And of course the Sandy creek wall winch!
Some of the highlights...
Day one, stage one and giddyup the Little Mule takes first place. It was a blast up the creek, through some paddocks to a couple of mud holes following GPS points along the way.
6 hour nav stage.. Day before Rudi assures me that NO-ONE will get them all... Wrong!
Night nav stage.. Finished in good time only to hear muppet had torn the front end out of his GU... Little Mule to the rescue.. We went out and assessed the damage. Damage report; Hit a wash out, Snapped both front leading arms clean, snapped tie rod lug off swivel housing, smashed front uni and flange, torn front panhard mount and one leading arm mount off diff housing, squashed exhaust and dented pride... We returned to camp to fetch the Big mule (tow truck). Tassie boys had some front arms, Todd had a uni, we were looking good for a big repair but no swivel housing. Todd and Ivan and the Tassie boys followed us out to the 'scene' and we through in some front leading arms so we could drag it up on the truck. Back to camp we go.. an adventure in itself driving the tow truck through the wash outs. Back at camp we worked hard and get this... Kevvy from WEST DARLING HOTEL in Broken Hill let muppet borrow a swivel housing and front driveshaft out of his road car, Giddyup! we were good to go!.. So at 4.30AM we had the swivel housing replaced, arms in, shaft in, Panhard and arm mounts welded and it was time for a blast down the creek... Woooooooohoooooooooo..
The rivelary was fantastic, Todd and Ivan had some bad luck which kept them in our sights.. Smithy from smithies outback was annoyingly consistant and proved to be an unexpected threat hold the top spot for three days..Muppet was nipping at our heals until his incident and the Tassie boys were a constant threat aswell. All up the competition was tight and tuff.
A huge thanks to the Marshals for there time and efforts.. They cop a ruff time (from me) but keep smiling and keep the show on the road.
Huge thanks to the caterers, the tucker was great.. Better than great.
I'm sure i'll think of more later and we'll get some photos happening.

For now - I believe we are all safely at home recovering - what a week!
This year most stages were surprises. 1 creek run ended up a mud run. Another night creek run ended up a winch climb up the white cliffs. Imagine blatting in the dark up the creek full noise and around the next corner the creek was bunted off and a huge spectator bon fire blocked the path. Trapped ... Only way out is a string of flashing orange lights up the cliff to the left where an anchor point awaited ... Oh my God!
The water and mud was perrrrrrfect this year. We made sure the water was not much higher than sill depth and the mud had everyone doing a 5 x winch in 1 stage. Knocked the navi's around. Spooked the competitors with the night mud stage so I had to go in to prove it could be done. Since the quote of the day was "If Hobzee can do it anyone can" they all had a crack and loved it...
Barry and Jim sourced a new dsl motor and were back in Thursday. Brian and Barb went to B'Hill for a clutch. Todd and Ivan plagued with clutch problems. Smithie did more CVs than everyone else put together. The night nav stage near camp claims at least 1 swivel each year and this year Muppet took the cake. We want to know which Muppet he is - I'm thinking Animal (The drummer) .. Mick in the FAT GU did a turbo dsl GU motor in the sand and retired early - bummer. Gary did a tail shaft and brake lines in the rangie and despite lots of air, kept the axles and CVs in one piece. There was a bottom end gone in the 5.0 GQ, MTR did an alternator, RUFFY raped the FAT GU for bushes .. the list goes on. Everyone pooled together to help each other. No one was missed by Murphy.. All up the terrain was extreme and the stages were as challenging as they could be without being stupid.
This year we introduced speed. We had a Dash for Rudi's Cash stage. 3klm blast across a mud flat - woooo hooooo! Todd clocked 142+ k's with the fastest 4 times only 10 seconds apart - so we had some very quck trucks.
Special thanks to Jeff (property Owner), Kev (West Darling Hotel (B'Hill) Johno and Co at Silver City 4WD (B'Hill) CFA White Cliffs and spectators Kerry and Streetas for helping competitors. Marshalls did a brilliant job and we would have been lost with out Nic and Danni who looked after spectators. The shafes from On4toU for their support, cooking and assistance in setting up. Onya Rudes - you did great.
We raised $1000+ with auctions (even the jacket off rudi's back) for the Royal Flying Doctor.
Next year is going to be awesome(er). Date stays as the 2nd week of July because of school hols. Every competitor said they are returning with mates (to compete) and their families so the school holidays are go. Hopefully Ateco goes back to their usual date next year at end of July.

The organisation was ten fold on 2006. No waiting around just out there and into it.
I can honestly say that there was only one stage that was absolute poo town 101 plus!.. It was a stoopid drive through bamboo crap and wash outs looking for postage stamps on trees in the dark. It was utter crap. It wasn't even deservant of being in a club event let alone in a professional national event like this. But apart from that every other stage was exciting, fun and got the adrenaline racing. No real repeats from last year either so we were on a level playing field. Pitty you wont be there till 2009 Paul, it's come a long way and promises a lot more next year.

This years cliffhanger was a great initiation for Barb and I and justa into the challenges of long distance runs,high speed ,high engine temps,navigation challenges. I came away having learnt a lot and will be wiser for our next cliffhanger. The assistance we received from Hobsee and kevin on lending us computer inverters, Kerry for his mechanical assistance,the boys from Silver city 4x4 working on Tuesday night to fit a clutch and also for sourcing an engine for Barry and Jims patrol. The marshalling I found great.We will definately be back in 08 and better prepared for the challenge. By the Rudi,your jacket is nice and warm.

Well what an awesome week of 4 Wheelin.
Firstly I have to thank my wife for looking after the kids and our business each time I go racing. Thanks Honey.
It was definitely a tough week, we thought we had it in the bag to start with ahead by 40 points on day two, but then the competition stepped up a level and it was on. We only just won by 15 points with Lil Mule right up our clacker. Don't they deserve a donkey punch for such great efforts, always performing hard. Daniel I hope I didn't scare you too much with the dash for cash ride I gave you, doing jumps at 140K/h takes a bit to handle as a passenger. I've got Ivan trained to just say "Faster Faster".
This event has everything you could ask for, Sand, Mud, Rocks, Clay pans, Navigation, Winching, Very Fast Driving and slow technical stuff and much much more. We completed 100km on just 1 navigation stage with 50 navigation points to collect. Awesome.
We were even allowed to do victory doughnuts in front of the spectators on the clay pans. The V8 was roaring, Yeeha. What a fun relaxed event.
We were waiting for the last mud stage to be run and were getting a little bored so Muppet (Adrian and Al in Bad Influence) decide to go Barrel racing, we all set up a clover leaf course like the horses do and off he went, bettering his time each go. Thanks for the entertainment Muppet.
We will definitely be back next year to defend the title and with a new adapter to sort out the clutch problems.
I hope we see a bigger entry list next year and with $20,000 on offer for only $1,500 entry, why wouldn't you enter. No other event offers this value for money. Also the entry is for a full week of catered meals which were awesome, roast's, T-bones, Pasta's for dinner, Hot stews and soups for lunch, toast, cereal, bacon & eggs for brekky to name a few. We got to compete and fix cars without wondering what we were doing for meals as it was all organised. They had a full bar onsite with drinks at bar prices. As you can see I am blown away by the value for money that this event offers. We got to socialise with the spectators during and after stages who were also a great bunch of people. Marshalls did a great job as well.
A special thanks to Dale from 2DEXTREME for doing so much work on the 4B, building it strong enough but light enough to handle everything I put it through. I use 2DEXTREME leading arms with a custom setup which he guarentees will not break, I have tried my hardest but fail every time. Dale has done all the engineering from the cab cut, bar work, roll cage, bull bar, strengthening diffs, installation of hydraulic bump stops and King shocks and much more. He also sell's and installs swaybars from Climax Industries, King shocks and full suspension setups. Thanks Dale.

Well done to Rudi and Hobzee for pulling off such a great event yet again. I can relax now that all four wheels are on the ground.LOL. Boy did that get hairy?
Im so disappointed i missed last years Cliffhanger now knowing it was so much fun. Doesn't matter, plenty more to come.
I also have to thank Nerida for her rivalry, that was soooooooooooo much fun. Can't wait to see you next year chicky. I've already got some tricks up my sleeve for next year so look out girl!! LOL. I'll also have to have some singing lessons too...lol.
How good was Kevvies food? I ate better there than i do at home. Thanx Kevvie, hope to see you at the next one.
To all the other wives and children that missed this years event. You truly wont regret coming to the next one. There's tonnes of room for the kiddies to run around so you can relax and enjoy yourself as well.
Looking forward to seeing you all again next year and meeting a whole lot more newcomers.

What a blast. If the competitors had half as good a time as we did then they had an absolute ball. We can only reiterate what every one else has said regarding the food, company, competition etc. Just want to say thanks to all as there are too many people who need to be thanked individually. We took a couple of hundred photos over the course of the event so if any of the competitors want any just send us your email and a description of your vehicle and I'll send any we've got through to you. We tried to post them but have absolutely no idea what we're doing so gave up.

That says it all.. Well done Barb. You and Brian showed some fantastic persistance... When it was anounced that the draw for the start order of the mud stage was going to be random Christian said to me "I bet Brian and Barb pull out number one".. You attacked that stage with courage and dignity for the second time.
