taillight dramas after engine swap

Post by Puk »

I have searched this, but can't find anything that isn't about hooking up extra work lights.

We took out the 1l motor from the Maruti and put in the 1.3 and the 5 speed box.

Now the reverse lights won't work. I have found the wires that come from the reverse switch, and plugged them into the existing 1l loom, even checked them with a test light, and the reverse switch is working, but nothing is getting through to the lights themselves. And it isn't the globes or the connections, which i checked too.

Does anyone know how i can get the reverse lights to work seeing i have a working reverse switch and wires coming from it? How hard would it be to bypass the loom and wire them up separately? What would be involved?

Just a guess, the earthing may be different?
I know later zooks have positive switched headlights, wheras my 1.0 litre has negative switching.
Maybe this could be an issue with rev as well??

Normal situation is...power is permanent to one side of rev lites, and they earth through the gearbox switch when in rev, thus turning lite on.
I believe this is probably still true in later models?

Try and check see if there is power to one side, with a tester.
If it is live, try earthing other side, see if lites come on.
This will help with problem solving.

If all else fails, try a new power lead to one side of rev lite, and a new wire back to the switch.

There is 3 or 4 switches on some gboxes, so could you be using a wrong one (I not sure as mine never worked)

hope this helps

Argh , Puk , what have you done now , 5 speed is positively switched so you need to check if you have power through the reverse switch , Don't know about 1 litre harness but 1.3 has a fuse in the main block. The power wire is a yellow feed to the switch then a solid red wire to rear , light is eathed at the fitting at rear , can't see it being different but might be , pull rear light fitting off and see where the wires go , if one goes to earth it is positively switched , those switches are very easily damaged and you might not be able to see if the wires have been broken . Check the switch activates with a multimeter and you are looking for a dead short when the reverse is selected. Can't say much more until you look at the rear light , good luck , Cheers Paul.

have a look at were the loom travels to the rear of the car, and make sure its not damaged above the rear axle or that area, years ago I remember have problems there as another component was hitting it and pinched the loom, i know its got nothing to do with the engine swap but another idea, If you have tryed to start the engine without a heavy earth leab going to the block it can burn out the switches in the gearbox and also the small earth lead going from firewall to head aswell,
