MQ and GQ steering
MQ and GQ steering
Ok then, The MQ steering set up has a relay rod from the steering box to a Relay arm then a drag link to the tie rod and the tie rod controls the steering? all in front of the diff.
On a GQ does the drag link go direct from the steering box to the wheels and the tie rod goes from wheel to wheel behind the diff.
Question is What is the difference??? The GQ set up must be better?? cause it is newer and if so how much better. And could an MQ set up be changed to a GQ set up???.
YES i'm Bored
Cheers

The relay junk was put in there to prevent bump steer and wobble and all that jazz. Helps reduce vibrations on washboard roads also. But that is only if it is new! Little bit of wear and it makes the problems worse than if it wasn't in there.
The G60 (1960-1980) didn't have the relay junk. The MQ/MK did...relay = new design Nissan thought was awesome. Obviously they realized it causes more probs then it fixed so they got rid of it with the GQ.
You don't need any of the relay junk. It can all come out and the truck will steer and handle fine.
I have seen H233 leaf sprung fronts fitted to MQ/MK's...it will work fine. If you do it post some pics!

Cheers, so if i changed the drag link to a longer one and ran it from the steering box to the tie rod it should be better??RMP&O wrote:The relay junk was put in there to prevent bump steer and wobble and all that jazz. you will also find that if you convert to a "gq" setup the drag link hits the leafs at certain points in the travel. hence why even a 97 model leaf cab gq even tho it has a gu style steering box still uses the relay rod setup.
it can be done with a lil fiddleing tho

yah, i was going to suggest searching for this and find what he did, he had to get some custom parts made and then it worked great!Hoppy11 wrote:Na the first GQ utes were leafj-top paj wrote:i thought all GQs were coils up front?

found a pic on here of a GQ with MQ Knuckles and steering set up, so I wonder if there is a difference in the feeling of the steering from MQ to GQ

hands and mums dont count!!!
Better? Well I suppose that is a matter of opinion and mine is yes it is better.Hoppy11 wrote:Cheers, so if i changed the drag link to a longer one and ran it from the steering box to the tie rod it should be better??

But by saying "better" it makes me think you have some steering probs like wobble, shakes, bump steer, ect? I ask because steering isn't the only thing to cause this in a MQ/MK.
Yes run a longer drag link to get rid of the relay junk. Not a bad idea to run some 3/4" or bigger hemi joints too and get rid of tie rods. I am not talking about using GQ parts just using custom or junkyard stuff plus few new bits off the internet.

Why's it not an option dude?dattopimp wrote:Switchin a GQ front diff isn't an option for me lol. Thinking of doing this swap though, makes more room in front for 'accessories' Think I'll have to look into it abit more first though.

Well ok then, I just checked out today the steering of the first GQ leaf utes ( the one that use the MQ gaurds and the Cab bubble behind the window) to the later GQ leaf utes (that use the GQ gaurds and the bubble from behind the seats to the roof) and they both use the MQ steering, so If you wanted MQ knukles on a GQ for steering arm clearance, would it be easier to use the knuckles off a GQ leaf ute cause they woulds fit easier(being GQ to start with) and the steering is in front of the diff???90Mav wrote:??? GQ leaf utes have the same (MQ) steering setup... would have thaught it would be a straight swap...
My 2c cents

In the process now of reworking my steering on 83 Patrol. The work I am doing though will be temporary, meaning it will just hold me over till a SoA is done on the truck.Hoppy11 wrote:RMP&O
Have you done this convertion?? if so do you have any pics

I am mounting a PTO winch and it will be sucked way back between the frame rails. The relay arm assembly is in our way so out with the relay junk. Bought a custom length drag link today to run from pitman arm to tie rod, it is 37 3/4" long from center to center. My only concern is that the drag link may conflict with the PTO shafts. After looking at it I think we can just flip it over and it should be fine....

That is a damn nice Patrol you have Wicked.
Any probs with the high steer arm loosening up on you? I like you front diff guard except you have no guard covering the lower part of the pumpkin. I always seem to hit the lower part of the pumpkin.
How does the shackle reversal work? Keep bump steer down?
Your tie rod looks buff!
That a stock MQ/MK steering box?
