well as i can't find a chep locker for my 60 i was thinking of welding the diff as i have been told that there is not much difference to a welded diff and a detroit. i know a detroit or E-Z locker is ment to unlock but from what i'm told they do but not as often as there ment to. Is this true.

Auto lockers do unlock but need wheel presure to do so.
Auto lockers use a ratchet system to allow one wheel to travel faster than the other but not slower. What this means in practice is that when off road on a loose surface they are less likely to unlock.
If you weld the front diff on a 60 series at least you can unlock the hubs and reduce the impact but it will make it a lot harder to steer.
That being said the 60 series has a LWB and a bit of weight which would make the auto locker work better than in say a 40 series.
If you aren't going to use it in Hi 4WD on sealed surfaces / or loose ones at speed I would just weld it.

Whilst my detroit seems to be constantly locked, it has a certain amount of play which i think makes steering (especially at low speeds/stationary) alot easier. Sometimes it does become impossible to steer - i put this down to running out of play.
A welded diff will have no play whatsoever.
That's my theory anyway.

i would love to weld it but my old man thinks that i should buy an air locker but unlike him i don't have 1100 laying arond
it will not be for speed ect as it is a SPOA 60. just for play on the weekends and to get me to work and back when i get a job. and the odd trip to VIC, stockton ect ect

Toyota LSD's are crap. They are marginal from factory, and wear out quickly. LSD's only limit slip between the wheels, where as a locker solidly locks both wheels, allowing better traction, and more dependable drive, as you know that both wheels are always locked and turning at the same speed.old mate wrote:why not chuck a lsd in the front i had one in the front of my lux and welded centre in the rear and had no worries steering in the bush and still went everywere my mate with air lockers front and rear could.I only paid $100 for lsd

i'm not worried about welding it. just dont want to bracke too many CV's or when it puts me in the shit coz i can't turn it off + a SPOA 60 i just don't think that combination it a good idea........ all though my brain is telling me to just weld it and stop being a p@*!y

I only weld the front diff If I will run over slippery surface, like mud or sand ( I never try wel diff in sand ) and small tires ..
