bj70??? what is it.
hey. a mate just picked up a 1985 bj70. it looks just like a bundera same smaller size (not a middi 73) but it has cruiser running gear with leafs and a 3b deisel engine. i have never seen one before were they not in production for long before being replaced with the coils sprung hilux version?
anyway what r some things to look for, motor has 220,000k's on it and runs well no oil leaks but heaps of rust in body .
are most parts interchangable with 73/75's suspension and driveline wise?
how does the 3b take to a turbo?

The 70 series landcruisers were the SWB model, shorter than the middys as thommo has pointed out.
They share all the same components with the 73/74/75 landcruisers of the same vintage (post 1990 cruisers had an update and some things changed eg: hi pinion front diff)
The Bundera is a LOT different to a SWB landcruiser. if you look closely, a Bundera front is entirely different, blinkers in the front grill next to headlights - whereas all 7x series cruisers have the blinkers on the side guards. The interior is pretty much the same and I think some of the back body work.
The mechanicals are generally pretty reliable.. they are the same as all other heavy duty cruiser components so your mate should get a good run out of it if its been looked after ok.
You've probably found most of the rust but the more common locations are in the bottom of the rear guards and under the rear window sills, particularly if they are sliding windows.
I've got a 1990 PZJ70 (an even rarer breed again) and have the manuals for it so if your mate has any specific questions, feel free to PM me.
Cheers

Except the old prados had square headlights - 'Bunderas' (local model only?) had round lights. I'm sure i've seen SWB RJ/LJ models with the square lights too, however.2 rocks wrote:As Smithie said, Bundera had the "original" Prado nose...
I think that's a 13bt or 14bt, both direct injection heads IIRC - a little different to the 3b. However from discussion on here, the 3b seems to love some boost and is a very hardy motor.2 rocks wrote: I could be mistaken but I think Roothy's Milo has a 3BT (turbo) - not sure about that though...

I think you're right - it is the 13 not 3, but I'm sure I've seen factory turboed 3b's - Yum!dogbreath_48 wrote:I think that's a 13bt or 14bt, both direct injection heads IIRC - a little different to the 3b. However from discussion on here, the 3b seems to love some boost and is a very hardy motor.

The 13bt is the factory turbo diesel in BJ70/73 .The 14bt was never an option in this model. I used to have FJ70 with a 3F petrol motor. i now own 3 73 series i have 2 FJ73's and 1x BJ73.

Later models (1989+ perhaps) have the 14bt - but i don't think these were ever sold locally.Evil 73 wrote:The 13bt is the factory turbo diesel in BJ70/73 .The 14bt was never an option in this model. I used to have FJ70 with a 3F petrol motor. i now own 3 73 series i have 2 FJ73's and 1x BJ73.

3b never came factory turbo as far as i know.

This is correct. But they bolt straight in and boy what a great engine.Evil 73 wrote:The 13bt is the factory turbo diesel in BJ70/73 .The 14bt was never an option in this model. I used to have FJ70 with a 3F petrol motor. i now own 3 73 series i have 2 FJ73's and 1x BJ73.

I bolted in a non turbo 14b and it goes better than the 3b turbo that I had. Cant wait to turbo the 14b. It will be awsome. as good as a 1hz, in my opinion.
what r the timing belt change intervals on the 3b?
and what kind of power is acheivable with a turbo intercooler set up, 100kw? what r the standard?
also does anyone know how much these lil things weigh?
Were did u get a 4b or 14bt motor from?

there is no timing belt/chain, only timing gears.known 2 wrote:what r the timing belt change intervals on the 3b?

125kW (flywheel) is fairly easy out of an internally standard, rotary pump 3B with open exhaust and intercooler, running about 1 bar boost. probably get 110kW from the earlier versions.
they are a heavy motor, probably simimlar in weight to a 1HZ, all very heavy duty internals.
Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
heavy duty hey so thast good news. and sounds like there hard to kill.
what would u look for on one that has done 250,000k's ?

I just picked up a BJ70. It has the original 3B and 361,000 km on it. It blows absolutly no smoke under load or idle and is very tight. It is a welcome change from my Gu which has blew up 3 times before 40,000km.
I am looking at stretching the wheelbase from 90 inches up to 102 and running a A frame rear coil set up and a inverted radius arm front with X link plus sway bars for on road.
I will push the front diff forward about 10 inches and the rear diff back a bit. I will have to enlarge the rear wheel wells eventually running some 38's.
I may even look at a NA 1hZ in the future.
Are the BJ70 diffs the same as a 60 series diff. I understand that with some longfields axles and CV's a 60 diff is at least as strong as a GU diff.
Any advise on my ideas would be appreciated.

ur idea sounds wicked for ur truck dude.
i think ive seen rollin imports advertise 13bt's for 5500... although im not 100% sure.. you should check the 4x4 trader as they advertise in there..
i WISH i had a 13bt in my 40.. but i'll just have to be content with a turbo'd 3b.. :(
I think the mounts are the same as a 3b.. 13bt is a strengthend 3b block..
Good luck finding a secondhand one. I was trying to chase one for mine, after i had a bolt go through the intake and had no luck.shorty_f0rty wrote:known 2 wrote:anyone know how much a 2nd hand 13bt is?

I was quoted around $7000 for secondhand one when ringing rollins imports.
The B family has a great reputation and are pretty common here for this vintage. 13B are less common but more powerfull direct injected and rotative pumps ..
Anycase I will turboed it without fear .. 12 PSI and you are done.
