Lowrange 4.9's
Lowrange 4.9's
Hi all
just ordered lowrange offroad 4.9 tcase gears from( www.lowrangeoffroad.com *free plug*) last night 11/07/07, so sean will hopefully recieve my email this morning and process my transaction along with my payment and this email will give others a chance to see how long postage takes and the price of postage.
I bought these gears just as they came off sale, so had to pay the full $595USD instead of $535. Sean took the $5 of the price and with the $110 postage fee brings the hole package to $700. In AUD this now equates to $812.20 at the current exchange rates of around 86cents, which seems to be around $400 cheaper then 4.9's in Aus...
Will keep thread postage as my new gears arrive.

Great purchase Spike. These gears are tough. Make sure you also get a full bearing kit as well when you put the new gears in. I think it cost me around 100-120 to get all of the bearings...one of them was a genuine part only that I had to get direct from suzuki. Or the bearing places I went to couldn't get them in. Sean was great to deal with. I got my lock rite and gears at the same time and it came in at an awesome deal. easily under a grand AUS.
I've had the 4.9s for about 5 months with 31s, standard WT diffs and front lock rite. Have broken both front CVs due to a lot of traction + not thinking about my driving style. I've readjusted my driving style and haven't had any issues whatsoever since then. I actually have more fun now than before when I was probably a little too heavy on the right foot.
Oh Yeah, Just a side note, the gearset that www.lowrangeoffroad.com sell are the Trail Tough 4.9s. He's just a reseller. Don't know if you realised that or not.
Has made an absolute world of difference, the gearing is out of this world and high range is close to perfect on the highway. Mine easily cruises at 100 @ around 3700 rpm from memory.
Its a perfect all round car for victorian conditions (steep muddy rutted stuff) and drives on road like its stock.
P.S. Nic is that your new build in your avatar?! That is one CRAZY Pic! what the story behind it?

With the 1.6L and 4.9 tranny gears it'll be an absolute weapon. The 1.3 is quite sufficient and I rarely run out of power in any situation, I'd love to have a 1.6 with the gears though! Just be careful of breakages!

I paid for my 6.5:1 set and rebuild kit by Paypal a couple of days ago.. Paypal attracts an extra 4% fee but I had the funds there already. AUS$812 delivered. LowRangeOffroad.
Can't wait to GO SLOW. 31's and stock gearing is way too fast.

gears
I rebuilt my transfer today with a 6.5:1 gears and bearing set...
I'm stoked. My 5th gear low is now lower than 1st low used to be with stock gears. Max speed in (5th)low is about 25km/h . I haven't really driven it yet. High range is better too. I only went a couple of kays but I got to use 5th This weekend will be fun.
I have never rebuilt a transfer or gearbox before and it took me about 6 and a half hours. Drive in - Drive out. I HAD to buy a press. (6000kg supercrap $119) Missus thought that was a bit much till I explained how much I saved by fitting gears myself. Bring on the weekend

You don't have to buy a press......................aw shiat sorry did the missus hear.
When I did mine i just took mine into transmission workshop and got them to press the gears on $20, or as others have done some piping and a BFH (just like many do with bearings)

'89 SWB Soft Top, 6.5:1 Calmini gears, rear Lockright, 31s, pwr steering. 1.3 16vmpfi 1300 going in
To get the gears off you can use a gear puller (3 jaw 200mm from SuperCheap about $40) or once agian (though I am not recommending) BFH. You may break teeth, but these are the gears coming off not you new ones.

I didn't really HAVE to buy a press but the opportunity was too good to pass up. I could have gone somewhere but then I wouldn't have a press in my shed for next time I need it?
I wouldn't use a hammer to remove or fit gears, bearings or lock rings. Too easy to damage something or hurt yourself. The gearset cost enough $$ and are easy to smash with a wayward hammer blow.

MY GOD!!!! These gears are awesome!!!!
took about 4 hours total, made a few mistakes when putting it together, best to label, and take pictures so you remember. Also dont need a press, can be hit with hammer/rubber mallet and tube didnt hurt any of my bearings. GET THESE GEARS!!!! i can idle up stuff i couldnt even bounce up before, not even touching the throttle. The bling stickers are cool too
