2H turbo heavy oil consumption

Post by chunks »

Hey fellas,

I'm having a few dramas with the 2H turbo in my 60 using a shitload of oil. I've had the car for about 5 months now and its got just under 292 000km (i got it at 278 000km). I've just done an 8000km round trip from Canberra to Alice Springs and it uses at least 1 litre of oil per 1000km if not more. I changed the oil at Alice and put in RX Super 15w-40 (i've tried 3 different oils in it since i've owned it) and have had to top it up everyday. As far as i know the previous owner always maintained it but obviously something's not right and its just burning it. I'm going to put some Penrite HPR Diesel 20w-60 in next service to slow down the consumption but i know that's only a bandaid solution. I thought 292k was still pretty low and that it should still have plenty left in it.

Cheers,
Bill.

1 have 2h with turbo in my 60 and same problem. has just over 300 thou on the clock. I used 5 litres of oil on the 4000km round trip from brisbane to adelaide. it runs fine though, and blows no smoke at all. hopefully someone has an answer...

does it leak any when parked for a while? my mates 2H is going through oil at the moment cause of a busted front crank seal and it's leaking on the ground
At first I thought it was a sea anemone, upon closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.

If its not leaking it out, its gotta be burning it. No where else for it to go.

My guess would be possibly cracked ring, or slightly melted piston from too high EGT's.

First thing to do would be to compression test it.
If you want a spare 60 for bits-

The engine doesn't leak oil. The car still performs fine, but yeh i suspect there is an issue with the rings. EGT's are about 480-500 degrees when i had it tuned by the diesel shop.

Have you considered turbo oil seals?

I have thought about it but the turbo was rebuilt in 2000 and hasn't done that much work so you would think it should be sweet?

Get a compression check.
If that comes back okay, I'd be looking harder at the turbo too.
If it doesn't come back okay, you have the answer already.

Had the same problem with mine, though it only seemed to use oil during a hard run ie. towing or under load. The PO had removed the breather for the rocker cover from the air inlet and just had it venting via a hose down the side of the motor, this is were all of my oil went. (the underneath of the cruiser and the camper won't rust for a while)

While at operating temperature remove the oil filler cap and see if it is puffing like a train (mine was) or take out the dip stick and see if the sump is pressurising (true again).

I had a compression test done and it came back OK however on the low side of specifications. I bit the bullet and rebuilt the motor, expensive but I plan on done a bit of travelling and didn't want to worry about having to top up the oil every 1000km's.

Hey mate thanks for the reply.

When i take the cap off while its running it does have oil fumes coming out, but you can put your hand over the hole and it doesn't pressurise. The oil breather line plumbs back in front of the turbo.

I'm no diesel mechanic but you would have to asume that that oil mist is being drawn into the engine and burnt. It is a sign of worn rings and bores, which in a normally asperated 2H might not a big deal? With the turbo it means lots of blow by, which was why mine was using oil under load.
My mechanic basically said that I could keep topping up the oil as the motor was still producing good power and should still go for a long time or rebuild it.

Unfortuatly the 2H wasn't designed with a turbo in mind so with one fitted its life is shortened eg instead of 500000Km+ you only get around 300000Km (mine had done 285 000Km)

Cheers

We are taking about 2H with aftermaket turbo kit .. ?

Just start checking the hote that vent from valvle cover to the air filter. And let us know if you are venting or blowing in by exhaust white smoke ..

check in your intake for exess of oil ..
