NEW DIESEL INJECTOR PUMP EXCESSIVE SMOKE

I HAVE PUT ON A NEW INJECTOR PUMP ON MY 84 HILUX DIESEL BUT NOW IT SEEMS TO BE BLOWING A LOT MORE SMOKE THAN IT DID BEFORE.I ALSO THINK IT MAYBE USING A LITTLE MORE FUEL THAN IT DID AS WELL.I HAVE ALSO REPLACED THE TIMING BELT.COULD THE TIMING BELT BEING OUT 1 TOOTH OR SOMETHING CAUSE THE EXCESS SMOKE IT SEEMS TO RUN FINE JUST THIS BLOODY SMOKE PROBLEM.I HAVE HEARD THAT I SHOULD GET MY TAPPETS CHECKED AND ADJUSTED IS THIS A TRUE FACT OR NOT???I HOPE SOMEONE CAN POINT ME THE RIGHT WAY.

What colour smoke, white, black or blue?

White smoke, usually timeing related or water in fuel
Black smoke , unburnt fuel ie too much
Blue smoke, you're burning engine oil, rings, valve seals worn

Yes set your tappets and recheck your timeing and pump timeing.
Did you change or service the injectors when you changed the pump?
If not and they havent been done in a while or while youve owned the hilux do them.
Change the engine oil and fuel filter and clean / change the air filter.

You may also like to try some CEM oil treatment

Yes timing could be the issue (esp if it's a tooth out). Check that first.

Ive spent the money, have the stuff in front of me, and I am trying it on the next oil change.

Oh and the ubiquitous "mate"at work who's given it a go.

I don't recommend the hiclone, it wont help with a smoking diesel.

is it only smoking at full throttle?

if so the pump is proberly not tuned to your motor. a bit of sooting in the intake will reduce airflow, worn cam, poor valve clearences etc will also drop the amount oif air.

simply adjusting the scrw under the cover on the back of the pump should fix the black smoke.

if its smoking all the time it could mean injector problems or timing problem.

old injectors could be your problem as well, are they older than 100,000klms? if so they could be your problem rather than pump.

You should be confident enough in who did your pump that the fuel settings are correct. Your old pump may have been backed off to stop this without you knowing. If so, you have another problem. If its black smoke, its either too much fuel or not enough air or a combintaion of both. Check air filter condition, valve clearances, exhaust system for restrictions, then have injectors tested. You will probably find that after all this is done it should be ok.

Adjusting the pump without checking all these is just curing the effect and not the cause.

it you change the tips/injectors in the same diesel lab .. that work on your pump and your air filter are not blocked get back to the diesel lab .. maybe just a human error that they can solve easy ..

I had shit load of white and blue smoke on start up then found out the injectors had gone got them replaced and was out of tune now i have no smoke at all when starting up and on road
