Noise in HJ60 steering

Post by glenxr650 »

When I am in 4WD and turning sharply under load I hear a constant clicking noise. Are these the CV's? (no diff locks by the way).
What am I up for to replace them? Is it a big job?

my brother had the same problem but i cant remember what it was, i think it had something to do with the bind in the tailshafts. either that or something to do with his springs. or my memory could be completely wrong and i could be so far from the answer.

i had a problem with my 60 series around corners or over bumps at low speads a big noise that sounded like the shackels inverting
i changed the bushes and still had it and gave it a good thrashing at menai and went away

after looking for new tracks out the back of galston and not finiding any that were decent the dam noise is back so i have to go and give it another thrashing to get rid of it.

talked to toyota and they reckon it is common in the 60s

Flat ground or off road?
How worn are the shackle bushes? The spring may be rubbing on the shackle.
Are the U bolts tight?
Ur tyres aren't rubbing on the inner guard/shock tower?
Thats the easy options.

In 2wd 0r 4wd? If its in 4wd it will more than likely be the cv's.

Thanks for your help guys. It is my CV joints. They apparently usually last the life of a vehicle but being an ex coal mine vehicle, they've probably had a hard life.
I have quotes for $195 each reconditioned or $350 new. I think I will go the cheaper option since I'll only own it for a few more years.
