LWB Sierras! Which Year?
LWB Sierras! Which Year?
Can you confirm for me please?
81 to 84 were 1L/4spd and had the old 1L NT grill?
85 to 88 had 1.3/5spd and had the the gril change like the WT in the SWB.
From 81 to 88 are the same body mounts etc. so any WT body sould bolt onto it.
89 to 98??ish ect were all the same 1L and are the Marutis??
Im trying to find out mainly if the Ute I have found is a 85 like the owner says of is a 84 because the gril is the old grill. And if the WT body I have will bolt on to it because the body on this LWB is Shagged!

Don't you mean 300mm longer than the SWB?alien wrote:
Also - the LWB chassis is around 300mm longer than the WT -
Also he mentioned it was a ute and as the extra length is in the rear, it shouldn't make any diference to the cab (But I am not 100% on this)
Peter.
Cable bracing is the way of the future!

WT body will fit a NT chassis no problem. I have done this.
SWB and LWB cabs are identical up to the body mounts under the back of the seats.
1.0 LWB's didn't have boosted brakes, have a narrow trans tunnel and a square shifter hole for the transmission. the inner rear body mounts near the inside rear seat mounts on the fron seats are captive on 1.3's and loose bolts on 1.0's
The 1.0 chassis has small diameter rubber body rubbers and no dimples in the chassis were the body rubbers go through.
Your changover dates are right, except some people contend that 1.0 litres were sold right up to 88. I have never seen a 1.0 after 84, which is when they changed to 1.3.
hope this helps.

Thanks All,
I spoke to the bloke again and he said yes it says 84 on the complience plate.
He said it was a steel dash which is another thing that made me think it was pre 85, I always thought 85 had the plastic dash.
The body is pretty rough but as long as it all fits and interchanges with no big worries I have a WT body i can cut down or I can just do some major rust repairs (DOH!)
Is there any engineering problems with putting a 1.6 into a 1L??
Engine & gearbox Mounts etc?

Build or compliance?
There is a difference here between a 1984 model and 1985 model. 1984 models were 1.0, 1985 models are 1.3. The exact changeover date will be grey as there will have been overlap. My guess is compliance would have run into 1985 easily. Suzuki are notorious for haveing big time lags between build and compliance.
I still say that 1.0's were not avialable once 1.3's came on stream. Amy sold side by side with a 1.3 will have been old stock.
I have heared that 1.0's were being sold new up until 1988 but have never seen one.
The exact changeover date will be hard to pin down, but by Jan 1 1986 all new cars had to run on unleaded, and there were some other ADR changes that were covered by the 1.3. (laminated windscreens etc) AFAIK, no 1.0's were sold after the 1984 build cars were all sold.

1.0 engine and gearbox mounts are in completely different spots. Putting a 1.3 into a 1.0 is possible with bolt in mounts (search for Christover's conversion) but the ideal way is to move the mounts and reweld them.
1.0's have different transfer mounts, radiator mounts, recovery eye (front) brake line brackets, body mount dimples - it can all be worked around but it is a bit of work.
Steve.

same answer except the 1.6 litre RHS mount is 20mm further forward than in a 1.3. (or something - that's from memory)
Steve.

the driverside mount on the chassis has to go back 10mm on a 1.3L, you are best to cut off the 1.0L mounts and fit the 1.3L ones in the correct position. this is what i've done and the car has a factory look, with no spacers or any thing like that.

Thanks Steve/Mitch
Got any measurements Mitch?
I wont be able to follow the original mounts because unfortunatley this has a old corolla heap of junk in it and the mounts have already been changed so that motor is coming out and my 1.6 is going in!
Other than the gearbox and chassis mounts the Chassis should be the same as a 1.3?? EG strength, etc?? Or are the old 1L a bit of a pain?

the chassis are almost the same.
couldn't give you acurate measurments as I've got a chassis extension, and i mounted my engine mounts before i cut the rails. the measurements were taken from the front of the rail to the front edge of the mounts.they were tack welded in then a motor dropped in to double check, before they were welded in for real.
give me a few days and i'll take some measurments off the spare chassis.
Mitch
