HID CONVERSION
Moderator: -Scott-
just fitted a set of 6000k to my ipf 900's
not impressed with it at all
get static in my radio when they are on. The inverters humm, and the light output is not fantastic at all.
The light floods really well for about 10m infront of the car, but the distance light is pretty crap, not as good as the 130watt halgoens i had in it. This i think is due to the fact that the light source is no longer located in the optimum position for the lense to work properly, its too far forward.
Also, you will need to drill about a 22mm hole in the back of your light to clear the wiring coming out the back of the globe. Its no biggie thougyh as the ribber gropmmet that comes with the kit works quite well and it looks quite neat afterwards.
Not sure if the hid's are working properly thoyugh, as im not sure if they should humm or if i should be getting static. Will play around a bit more when i get a chance, will throw some caps on to see if i can eliminate the interference with the radio.

Given how noticeable they are does anyone think it's possible there'll be a blitz sooner or later?
I doubt it, as plenty of cars are factory fitment, and plenty of blue lights are jsut that, blue tinted bulbs.
If you go for the 4300K it's a lot more "reasonable" in colour.

IIRC, the factory fitted ones are all in cars that have "active levelling", which is what makes them legal. So unless you're in a late model euro car you are probably going to stand out. I dunno, I am starting to think they are a good idea for spotties and not so much for headlights.me3@neuralfibre.com wrote:]chimpboy wrote:Driving home from the airport last night, I started to retreat from the HID idea. Especially since with HID I can get one pair of low and one pair of high, whereas with halogen and a four-headlight system I can get two pairs of each.
Does anyone know of some hard numbers on lumens of output from 35W HIDs vs 55W, 60W or higher wattage halogens?
This is not legal advice.
This is good info.on4tou wrote:A 55w halogen has around 850 lumens 100w has about 1600 to 1700 lumens and the globe life is around 500hrs . A 35w HID has about 3200 lumens a 50w HID has 5000 lumens and both globes have a service life of 3000 hrs.

For me, after weighing it up, I've decided to skip the HIDs on the stag and take advantage of the fact it's got four headlights, so I bought four H4 headlight inserts plus four 90/100W lamps. So I have four high and four low, with HID I'd have been looking at two high and two low. So the lumens should theoretically work out about the same. Anyway, it's to replace a 37.5/55W sealed high/low beam plus a 75W high beam so it's got to be better! 37.5W, sheesh. Did a comparison in my work room and by crikey 37.5W is dim even in a small room.
With the fourby (Mav/Patrol), I already have the 130/90W lamps in the headlights with my own loom and relays and find them quite good, but I think maybe HID in two of the four spotties could be an idea one day.
I can't quite get myself comfortable with HID in headlights yet. Maybe I'll change my mind, I'm definitely not disputing that the light output is superior, just concerned about the fact it's noticeably different in colour to halogen.

It's a little late, but if yo ugo to Repco and flip through the Hella catalogue you'll find some sealed beam bulbs in there with a clear lens. They are generally made by GE or Phillips and are 100W. I highly recommned them. They always outperformed any Halogen I have owned, and for apencil beam, the pattern is good. Labelling on the back is "Aircraft".

Are all HID Globes the same and just the balast different watts? Not talking about the different colour ranges just the wattage.

For all those contemplating putting hid kits into there h4 reflector headlights….please don’t. Stock reflector headlights generally can not handle the extra light created and just end up glaring all over the place blinding other road users. Its even worse with 4x4s because we sit higher up. It would be no different to keeping your spotlights on. If you really do want a HID setup on your headlight, seriously look at retrofitting projectors so that you can at least control all that extra light with a decent cut off.
As for adding kits to your spotlight, as someone mentioned previously if you can keep the focal point the same (ie same bulb in the same location) they should work well. Just remember that bulbs and ballasts don’t like being turned on and off quickly and in fact that’s one of the quickest ways to destroy them.
I don’t mean to plug other websites or anything, but Hid Planets forums are a good place to look if you want more information (http://www.hidplanet.com/forums)
Just my 2 cents,

Thanks jet-6 for the kind words.
I do agree Danwa that the hids are definatly better with upgraded headlight inserts. We do actually import projectional lenses for Patrols, Hilux's and a one piece projectional unit for 80 series, (or any vehicle with a 7"round or 9" rectangular headlight)which we can supply with the kit. Regarding the spotties, if they are the same globe type and a reasonable quality you won't have any problems (lightforce are the only ones that may be an issue, but kits are available that will fix that problem.) Regarding turning them on and off, it isn't overly recomended but we haven't had any issues with ours despite the kids regularly turning the light on & off and switching them between high & lo. The 2 year old especially loves anything he switch or turn. If they are reasonable quality you shouldn't have any dramas.
As a final note our web page is now up & running (Thank you Weeman) so feel free to click on the link and let us know what you think. We'll build on it from there.

Hi Chimpboy et al,
Using my 35 watt sliding 6000k's on a nightly basis atm and loving them. Got used to the slight blue tinge. Have them aimed slightly lower than normal, and have not had 1 car flash their high beam at me. Pump out an amazing amount of light on high or low.
Has transformed driving in the country at night.

I've got chinese ones in my Hella 4000 Spots, no worries with reliability or pattern (other than I don't like the hella pattern). 6mths + now.
Mate has sliding one's in his disco, no probs there either. 3mths.
So the chinese ones aren't all bad, even if they are (mis)labeled made in Germany (yeah right)
