Tapets adjustment "very noisy"

Hi Evry1,

Thanks for all ur help with my timing belt change. Specially to MART and LEXPLAY. All your suggestion and photos help a lot. Started the car today for the first time today but realise the TAPETS are very noisy. I loosen up all the Valve Adjusting screws when i was changing the timing belt and tighten them again according to the "Valve Clearance Table" using a feeler guage. I don't know if i was doing it right but evrytime i adjust 1257 i turn the crankshaft 360 degrees and adjust 3468, then when i turn it again 360 degress when cylinder1 is at TDC when i check the clearance of 1257 its off again. i adjust all of them i think about 5x. Is the table im using not right? is there any easier way to adjust these. And also i don't know if my thermostat is working or my temp sensor as the temp guage is not moving from cold. i had the car running for about at least 10 mins. Any help please will be graetly appreciated.

Mate , I use 0.13 mm/0.0051 inch for inlet and 0.16 mm/0.0063 inch for exhaust and I don't know about every one else but I use these settings when the engine is warm , not hot because I have found the hot settings which are0.23 mm/0.009 inch for inlet and 0.26 mm/0.0102 inch are too noisy and never had an issue , and I just look at the cam and do the rockers which are loose , doing all of them and when you lock the locknut it will pull the stud up a little so you must recheck the gap with the feeler guage so what I do is tighten it a little more , nip up locknut and check gap , this is all done with feeler guage still in the gap , Cheers Paul.

Thanks Paul,

I adjusted mine after i change the timing belt. i haven't started the car so i adjusted them when the car was cold. But i will start it up tommorow and let it warm up and try ur measurements and let u know. Thanks again.

Hey Mart,

Ur a legend. I adjusted the Valve Clearance today the way u adjust urs, and wala no more noisy tapets. engine is now running smooth. But then i started to notice a white smoke comes out of exhaust. More when i accelerate or engine on load. But this should be in the next post. Mate, do u mind if i PM u with some question as u answered a lot of mine?

White smoke usually means rings and specifically oil rings. You might be lucky and your ring gaps have just rotated and are allowing a small ammount of oil to pass by the pistons. I think you said that this is the first time you have driven it since you bought it so you might want to do a compression test firstly , if its arround 170-200 you might get away with a thicker oil , something arround a 70 weight oil. If the compression is no good its time for a rebuild. Does it blow white smoke at idle , if it does it is the rings , if it doesn't it will be valve guide seals. IF at idle there is no smoke and when you rev it it could be valve stem seals or both. While running see how much air comes out of th rocket cover breather , if there is a lot this is blow by , this means air is leaking passed the rings on compression. Another way to check for blow by is to take you dip stick out while the engine is running , watch your fingers on the fan belts and fan. If there is heaps of air coming out this is also an indicator of blow by and would require a rebuild.

If a rebuild is required I would take the head of and check the bore. If the motor has been serviced regularly you might not have a ridge in the top of the cylinder. The ridge is where the top of the top rings travel to when the piston is at top dead centre , up , in the bore. If ther is a ridge the bore needs to be measured to determine how big the ridge is and if a rebore is required. Sometimes a rebore is not required and a hone with a bottle brush honer is required as these do not remove any metal out of the bore , they just scuff the bore . Then a new set of rings fiitted to old pistons. If a rebore is required all the materials can be sorced for arround $600 dollars.

If you where thinking of buying another engine that is also fine and a compression test and or seeing the engine running is preferable. Then depending on what you want to do a bigger engine can be sourced in the form of an import motor and there arround the 1500-2000 mark for a fuel injected front cut.

Being rich usually black smoke would appear at the exhaust so there is some stuff to try before you decide which way you want to go and timing is a factor but would not cause the ammount of smoke you are talking about. Also when you had your rocker cover off was the engine and the rocket cover all gunked up with crappy oil residue , see how you go ,Cheers Paul.

Generally ....

white smoke = water entering combustion chamber
blue smoke = oil entering combustion chamber
black smoke = too rich air/fuel mixture
