Mate , my shitbox is painted in 2 pack gloss enamel paradise blue from lacnam paint , materials cost $300 dollars and its tough as nails. A good paint job is 90 percent prep and 10 percent paint. Mine was painted in the backyard and turned out resonably well for my first two pack job. If this guy is offering a baked enamel booth spray job I would jump on it and as for colour I would go for a brighter colour as it will stand out more and will look cleaner , Cheers Paul.

hes going to do 3 coats of paint and min 3 coats of clear and baked so yeh i think its not to bad for the price as ppl send 2-3 times that just getting a respray

You're gonna have to trust me on this, but sierras look crap with too much time spent on the paint- they just look badly repaired. They were poorly/cheaply painted from the factory and that's the point - don't spend too much time doing up a cheap and sh!tty car only to find out it was a cheap and sh!tty car when it was first built - in other words- you can't polish a turd.

Have a think about what's happening here - You are doing all the prep, so how good it is going to look painted is all up to you. You will have lots of work to do to get the car smooth and flat, and the moment it gets gloss on it every imperfection will just jump out at you.... that's even before you take it in the bush.

Yes, you will be able to buff out scratches in the clear, but you won't be able to buff out the panel damage that inevitably occurs in a NT car used off road. If it has a lot of paint on it, it will just be a PITA to repair.

Hey, do whatever you want, but $1K is a lot of money for something that won't make the car run better, and might just make you anxious about driving it off road because you don't want to stuff the paint, which goes against the point of buying a rough old sierra to drive off road.

I painted mine 3 times with complete colour changes each time for the grand totalof around $100.

Mine was originally yellow, I painted it with 3 cans of Rivergum Satin Colorbond paint.

Got bored with that so painted it White Knight Orange, this time about 6 cans.

Finally I changed it to Hammertone Charcoal and used 4 cans.

All of the paint jobs (except maybe the orange as I was a bit lazy) looked great, were easy to repair scratches and were cheap.

If you are going to get a paintjob done as MART said prep is everything. I didn't particulary care and still got a halfway decent result. With good prep and masking and the right paint it will look fine.

You may not understand, some people do actually go 4WDing, therefore capability is of upmost importance. Either way he's still paying for the paint job.

There's a free paint job and there's a "cheap" one.

In this case, the $1000 paint job would pay for transfer gears, maybe lock rites both ends.

I would never pay $1000 to paint my zook BUT it's only used off road if it was still my daily driver i would care about the paint job but not that much!

on this same topic did you guys respray the engine bay and interior or did you just work to a line and stop there? 3 cans surely wouldnt do the whole car inside and out. priming or just sanding it back enough?

I did a full resprayed on my brothers SWB 5 years ago in 2k.........

I did a lot of prep work and painted the car tonka yellow.........now the car is used only offroad and is not driven carefully and the paint has held up perfectly....It has not cracked, peeled or rubbed off in any way....

Yes there are custom pin stripes down the side but with a quick wash all sins are hidden......

It looks neat and apart from the bright color it doesn't attrack attention which is what a neat paint job should do.

My LWB is getting a full respray in 2k even though it is offroad only.........

I am doing it myself so it will only cost me paint and done once properly I will never have to touch it up again unless I really do a great deal damage. 2k done properly will flex and move with the panel without cracking and is very hard to scratch up...

The amount of time I have spent on engine, runnng gear and chassis I see no reason why I should be lazy on the body part of the project

I had to paint my ute, as some panels off another zook i used for parts were grey and my original one was white. With a $45 tin of white industrial enamel, 2 tins of thinners and a spraygun i borrowed, we did a LOT of prep, gave it 2 coats, (including the chassis and the inside of the engine bay) cut 'n polished it and then applied some "glide on glaze" type stuff to give it a bit of a clear coat and protect it over the top. It is both a DD and a hunting rig, and looks great.

Each to their own i guess, but i would not spend any more money on it than that. Half my presentation problems are solved when i get around to washing it.
