Letter from QLD Transport
Letter from QLD Transport
G'day all. I got a letter from QLD Transport saying my Patrol was defective and I have to take it for inspection in October. It didn't say what the problem is and wouldn't tell me over the phone. Its a gq with 4-5 inch suspention lift, 2 inch body lift, cheezy style tube bars front and rear, quater chop and 35 inch muddies. All is very profesionally finished and the vehicle is very tidy. Is there anything I should be changing or worrying about?

Rob,
2-3" suspension lift is all that is allowed. Plus the 2" body lift if it has been done properly - but that is suppose to have been approved upon installation by taking it over the pits.
35s - Uh Uh !!
Quarter chop - I bet you still don't have your mudflaps (which are suppose to be about 300mm max from the ground)
Have you removed your swaybars or have non approved adjustable panhard rods etc.?
If the letter you have received is personally signed by a transport officer then he has seen you and called you in. There is a crack down at the moment prior to the implementation of the National Code of Practice (NCOP).
If the letter is signed by a computer (ie a form letter) then some-one has dobbed you in and they are then required to call you in. If they couldn't tell you what was wrong with your vehicle I would guess that they are acting on a complaint - so keep your eyes peeled as to who you have upset lately.

Hi Rama,
most of the news is good - upto 150mm of lift - with engineers approval.
Tyres 50mm bigger than standard - not 35s but better than the existing 15mm limit.
Lots of other stuff also. Rules are more defined than current so at least we will know what we can and can't do. As to when they are introduced ?????????

150mm cool and is that total or plus body and is it accross the board ie suzuki to f350 and do you know if it will allow for wider wheel track because if its the same as sydney then ive seen a sierra with gq diffs big lift and legal well it had a engineers report anyway.
i'm sorry if this starts a whole aray of questions from everyone

I was asked to provide comment (as an industry representative) on the draft copy of the NCOP. I got the section on suspension and some-one else got a section on ... etc. The suspension section in the final draft stated that 2" suspension lift did not require authorisation, but anything above 2" and upto 6" would require full engineering certification.offroader-rama wrote:150mm cool and is that total or plus body and is it accross the board ie suzuki to f350 and do you know if it will allow for wider wheel track because if its the same as sydney then ive seen a sierra with gq diffs big lift and legal well it had a engineers report anyway.

I have since heard that the 150mm would be the total height allowed by the NCOP (ie body and suspension lift) but that would mean that if you had a body lift then you couldn't even do a 1" suspension lift with-out full enginering certification - so I need to get a copy and read it front to back.
Track width I believe stays the same as the old rules - max 50mm wider track than the original manufacturers specs. for live axle vehicles.

what areas guys?
talk like this makes me nervous, ive de-reg'd my weekend slider coz it was a bees dick off the ground and draws way too much attention, and if your telling me theyre cracking down on 4wd's im gonna be in shit :(

I got one of these letters a few years ago for my hilux. All I did was deregister and then a month or so later registered it again. Problem solved
But in the long run its better to be legal. I only ended up getting pulled over again and again. Keep a legal lift and have play tyres or build a trailered rig.
