i find hand throttles work wonders

my hand throttle is flat out keeping the revs up enough to stop the annoying rattle of the disused spare wheel chain winder up thing under the rear of the car. Low idle speed= god awful rattling. A handfull of throttle= all is well! As for highway speeds... well hopefully CC will be a winner?

can you remove the winder?? if not, some bits of rubber or foam shoved in where its rattling mite help....

How much do they cost? I've never noticed them but wouldn't mind some cruise control....

Yep, have on on my Cherokee. Easy to install, step by step instructions. If you've ever installed a radio or driving lights, shouldn't have a problem.

Mine's an auto, so not sure about the extra clutch swithch on a manual.

Supercheap is a decent sized trip for me (stupid, I've got autobarn, repco, and two bursons much closer!) so can anyone tell me, what different parts of the car do these hook into? ie where does the speed sensor go and what does it grab onto to control the throttle...

I am a bit keen on this if it works okay, I never thought much of cruise control but I've gotten used to it in the falcon!

Yes, very similar.
Speed sensor is on driveshaft (magnets wired on) and pickup is mounted next to where you put the magnets.

Cable attaches to where your accelerator cable hooks up

was thinking of one of these, for a 80 too. how good do the brackets look to mount the pickup of the driveshaft? or do you have to make your own?

asking because when in deep mud/water don't want it to be bent or anything. have scratches etc on the driveshaft, so guess i'm using all my clearance and then some

A few mates and I have aftermarket units fitted. They tend to be better than the factory cruise I have owned due to the adjustable sensitivity. Most factory sensitivity is too wide, so they slow down too far going up a hill before starting to correct, then want to over correct. The aftermarket ones feed in the throttle much sooner so don't have to try to accelerte up hill, just maintain. You would think the factory stuff would integrate more effectively, but Commodore and Surf sure didn't.

I'd rather not have these magnets and sensors on little brackets waiting for the next rock or tree branch to rip it off from under my car. The aftermarket one I have uses the speedo wire instead. It isn't a vacuum operated one and it has the option of two types of switches. I went for the stalk type which matches the wiper switch in the 80 so it looks completely factory. I don't remember how much it cost me exactly (was more than the super-cheap), but here is the US link if anyone is interested.

I used one on a Diesel GQ (turbo)

Worked great.

As stated glue the magnets (use 2) as well as wire.
Mount the pickup coil off the bracket on the crossmember on top side.
Never had a part damaged.

These are the Command AP series of vacuum cruise controls. I got my alarm guy to fit my AP50 unit at the same time as the alarm, it works ok although get a bit of "off-on" on the throttle cruising, which is not comfortable...i need to play with the sensitivity a bit.

He called Command Group technical people (I called them first and said they would aonly tell an Auto Electrician rather than me incase something went wrong and I sued....fair enough) who told him which wire was the speed sensor one (red and black I think on the Cruiser 80), thereby avoiding using the magnets, which either fall off or get knocked offroad.

Well its nice that this thread is recent.
I am thinking of fitting up a kit to my ute in a couple of months. It will be going on a manual diesel GQ. Dont know if I want vac or elec. But would like to be able to pick up from the speedo sender (if they have one).
SO what is there?
I know I can get an AP60 from supercheap or autobahn for around the $200 mark.
But what else is out there for a similar price?

First trip with mine up the highway to the snow.

problems after a late night install the night previous:

Magnet worked loose: reason - didn't use double sided tape as instructed (rooted something else and needed it for that...) Lesson, use tape or glue.

CC not working above 80km/h - reason: not sure why but it wouldn't work over a certain speed. I recalled an instruction about cutting a wire loop that came from the control box so beside the highway, leatherman, snip, problem solved. Lesson: clip the purple loop only after a highway test. I think it makes it more sensitive to high speed pickups.

CC really jerky - reason: sensitivity too high and making it work to hard to keep exactly the correct speed. Lesson - adjust to low sens to dumb it down a bit and smooth it alll out. Puuurfect!

Other than that, it went easy. Servo powered off vacuum booster, wiring slipped in nicely, controller velcro'd to dash (look into the stalk option!!! The pad isn't the nicest looking) and all smiles down the highway. My sensors are up under the tfrcase bashguard so I'm not that concerned about ripping them off, but I could see your concern. I guess you could make up a tonka tough bracket to house the sensor, and the magnets could go right up next to the t/case or gearbox to offer some protection.

I love it, cheap (sorta), easy and seems to be reliable...

Chimp, he's been a farktard in the nissan section aswell.

Now does anyone know if its possible with an AP60 kit to use a speedo sensor wire. Or even if that is possible to do on a GQ?
Or do I have to use the magnet type setup? I realise Bazzle had a good run with his this way. I would just prefer to use a sensor wire if the GQ has one (aslong as it dosent then give false readings to the speedo though).
