SD33T

Post by Sterlo »

Hey Mate

More than likely a dead glowplug or 2 or 3. OR starving for fuel. check glow plugs first then check fuel filter. Also there is a fine stainer inside the banjo fitting on the fuel inlet to the injector pump.

my MK sd33t blew lots of white smoke at start up.

I reco'd the injectors but it still blew lots of white smoke on start up.

When warmed up it was fine.......

Glow plugs not working well cause white smoke on startup......

If it doesn't clear up once warm????????

do the abvious like filters and stuff and if all else fails you may need to do the injector pump as it may be under fueling.......

could it be a possibility of a rooted engine? rebuild time?

Does it use oil?
Does it overheat?
Is it low on power?

If it is only white smoke I doubt it is stuffed just needs things fix or replaced......

thats my web diagnosis.......

Chief!, make sure that shes able to get air. try renuewing the air filter (or try starting it without the filter on it (ie open air),. and see if it still does it.

mikne did the same a long while ago, and both pre-filter and air filer were full of bull dust.

anyhows, see how ya go

i will try but reading through my mq manual it looks like some sort of a fuel prob, maybe timing is out, cause it coughs n shit when its cold and has trouble idling so i have to pull the manual choke on

if you haven't done it yet give it a full service....

new filters throughout....air and fuel.......

it will blow white smoke when cold so that is a given but after couple of minutes should clear up and only blow a little black smoke under load.....

These are very basic motors and a good service maybe even injectors will clear the issue up.....

My SD33T had 300,000 kays and didn't burn oil but had the smoky habit on start up.....had more than enough herbs still to push 35's and cruise at 120kays all day long

mine smoked white at start up i changed glow plugs and it helped alot but still wasnt good i am gonna get the injectors cleaned but i was under the impression that the white smoke on start up was from cold fuel and that is also why it coughs and splutters and i thought if the air filters were blocked it would blow black smoke as it would be running rich

White smoke is NORMAL on a cold startup

The white smoke is a result of the diesel NOT being hot enough to burn correctly

The white smoke SHOULD stop after a couple of minutes of running ( if your engine is still producing white smoke 5mins after inital cold start, you have other issues unless you live in an arctic region )

Old glow plugs will cause difficulty in cold starting & produce a high level of white smoke, as a result the engine will run very roughly for a few moments once fired but should run normally after 2 or 3mins.

Blue smoke is a sign of oil being burnt = engine rebuild time

Excessive Black smoke is an over rich engine, there should be some black smoke present during hard acceleration only.

We need more info regarding........

amout of white smoke when the engine is @ normal opperating temp ?

how long does the "rough running" continue for ?

how old is the diesel in the tank ?
( you havent accidently put in some ULP by chance have you ? , this will cause rough running and white smoke even when the engine is warm. A diesel engine will still run even with a high level such as 80% ULP in the tank ..... check the last fuel docket !!!! )

what filters have been changed ?

Has the turbo been checked and have you done a boost leak test ?

Have you infact blown the turbo ?

Things you may need to do........

Get it to a diesel mechanic and get

1/ a 'leakdown' test done, ( compression test )

2/an injector power flush done, ( yes they DO need servicing ! )

3/and the timing checked...... ( unlikely but should be checked )

4/ NEW filters !

If the leakdown test shows a low compression level then the other tests/checks will be a waste of time...... start looking for a replacement engine, or check ya bank statement for funds availibility for a rebuild........ & ......

if it comes to this, go the new engine, so much cheaper :D
