help with 2l in ln65

Post by kanookie »

Just wondering what my cheapest option is here i got a ln65 hilux with a 2l motor it just wouldnt start one morning sounded like the timing was out as the top oil seal had been leaking abit thought the belt might have slipped so got the new seal and belt put them on set the marks as the manual says well it wouldnt start sounds like its exhausting out the air filter??

decided to get a mechanic to have a look at it he checked the timing it was all done right so he thinks one of the valves may be bent or a hole in the piston? and quoted like $6000 for a rebuild cant really spend that much so what do you think my cheapest option is? what engines will bolt in without much modfication?

any advice would be great thanks.

3rz-fe - $3000 - $4000 tops if you do most of it yourself. It's a nice conversion.

Hi,

Here's a list of options:

1. Install another 2L
2. Install a 2LT
3. Install a 2.8, 3L
4. Install a 3.0, 5L.

I think option 3 would be your best bet. A 2.8litre engine known as the 3L. A straight bolt in and a little increase in performance.

been through this and the 2.8 would be a good thing, they bolt straight in and man does it go  then later on you can fit power steer, turbo and all sorts of goodies

2.4 and 2.8 are the same the 2.2 are smaller, not sure about 3.0 :?: someone will know
in your case the 2.4 turbo manifold and all the other bits will fit a 2.8, coz thats wats :) in my ln46

Similar to the 2L they are fairly dirty motors being indirect injection, however handle turbo's a bit better... only generally good for 300k before needing some work done, however there are ofcourse exceptions to this.

They are definately a better motor over the 2L, and should bolt straight in.

As usual, timing belt and injectors every 100 thousand, and possibly a pump check, and unless the pump has been rebuilt recently it will probably start to leak with the older style non-viton seals.

Dan.

Have done this conversion myself, you will need a new clutch coz the 2.8 is bigger, need the 2.8 alt, the manifolds are different unless you have a 2L with a steel rocker cover. Sumps are interchangeable if you don't get the right one on the 2.8. The clutch fan is different but can made made to fit with some fiddling around. Starter motrs are the same.
If you can get a complete engine it is far easier.
Cheers,
Matt
