a bj40 has a 2b, a bj42 has 3b and split case, and different spring bushing sizes i think. year differences. i think bj42's started 81 or something.

Early BJ42s were also 4 speeds so I think the main difference is the bigger 3b engine

BJ42 - August 1980 through to October 1982 had 3B (3.4 litre diesel) and
and a 4-speed.

BJ42 - October 1982 through to October 1984 also had 3B but a 5-speed instead. They both had two piece transfer cases.

There was also the BJ42 LX from 82 which had power steering, cloth seats and some other extras.
