hey guys,
i have recently brought a GQ patrol petrol gas and i was wanting to put a turbo on to it..
was wondering what was the best way to go about doing this.. should i just run gas? or can you incorporate petrol with out going the EFi...
what size turbo.. Basically just wanna know any info you might have that could help me..

ive heard something about that the gas powers the turno bettter or something on these motors for some reason?
my mates brother had a swb gq turbo petrol n went for a ride in it and it was great but a bit icky and then he did it on two straight gas tanks and it was a beast ran great and was crazy fast!!! lol

I've done a heap of TB42's with Gasresearch amongst 100's of other vehicles in my 10 years tuning at Gasresearch Performance Centre.
Its certainly simpler (and cheaper) to select a fuel but it is possible to blow through impco and a petrol carby, the better duel fuel performance is with EFI and a Gasreserch Carby though. My previous four wheel drive was straight LPG TB42 with a Delco 808(VN-VP) computer running the ignition for a full 3D igniton MAP which is a must for optimum performance in a boosted engine.
Prior to that I had a twin Gasresearch carby VK commodore running a Delco 808 that was duel fuel EFI 12.7 sec @ 106 mph 220 rwKw 5.0L solid cam head work balance and compression.
Before I moved to PGS I was tuning Andrews(On Track) Gasresearch vehicles but its a long way from Cambelfield to Mornington.
You may find as I did the straight LPG limiting in the long distance events so I have gone to petrol only for my new Gen 3 turbo truck as I want to do more long distance event and LPG is a pain for availability, also I get a bigger thrill from tuning the EFI petrol vehicles these days.
I'm happy to offer any advice from my experience if you are interested.

Would you need to enclose the carby to run boost or can you just seal up the top of it and run the piping from the intercooler/impco mixer to it?
What happens to the carby once you start exceeding 8psi?
Im guessing you would tune the ignition so that the car runs good with LPG allowing you to limp home on petrol if you ran out of LPG or it stopped working?
That is the only reason I want to keep dual fuel.
Would a high flow VL turbo be a good match for the low revving 4.2 aiming for no more than 150rwkw?

Many stock carbies will handle about 5-8 psi without being sealed in a box, however above that the seals and butterfly shaft become prone to leaking. The butterfly shafts need to be in good condition and sometimes have a positive seal fitted to stop boost and fuel spraying out under the bonnet. Also when on LPG any lack of sealing will let LPG and boost come into the engine bay when on boost(not desireable)
I've found that if using 98 fuel the ignition requirenents are similar to LPG so a suitable compromise is acheivable , however a distributor regraph and possibly a retard unit will be required.
Most people rather the LPG for regular use and the petrol as the back up as the PLG dosent suffer from issues on hills due to fuel sloshing around the fuel bowl.

I've done a few using Holden Delco 808, they are cheaper to tune, it will need custom tuning to run turbo and Fords software is less available for that vintage. I have the software for AU onward that is flash based and Hoden from VN to current. I use a V8 loom and modify a number of things (without giving it all away). A couple of cars I've done in this way have done multiple Vic Winch, Ateco and Outback without a problem.

Just curious whether one of these top hats would suit a low boost app on a TB42 carb running duel fuel, I've seen a charger with a hemi 6 with something like thisat a car show, running a super charger

It can work but if you have a 300k carby with play in the butterfly shafts you may end up spraying fuel out the shafts. Some carby joints can put positive seals on the shafts for correct sealing.
