Leaf Spring Suspension Mods in Queensland

Post by Meldge »

Hi Guys,

Needing help with Mods to Leaf Springs for a car to be LEGAL (almost legal) winthin Queensland.

I know a lot of people run extended shakles for starters and they are illegal, can anyone tell me how often people get picked for this sort of thing.

Also are there any adverse affects to changing the lengths of the mount where the other end of the leaf springs attach??? Probably not a good idea to extend that mount without extended shackles - probably throw some angles out a bit.

Also, I know that there was just a post for Body Lifts but my two cents are, majority of places I go say, metal blocks welded to chassis are legal, nothing else.

Longer Main Leaves???

Obviously not the big thick one at the bottom, which would inhibit the flex...

Pardon the Inexperience, but i'm learning... ;) [/quote]

The main leaf is the top leaf with the eye's /bushes in it.If you go longer you can put more camber in the spring, getting more height and better flex

Its a 86' MWB FRP Top Cruiser...

Currently at panel shop, being converted to permanent soft top.
I have never had it registered in my name, I want to get most work done, beforehand - if feasable.

I might be able to go for maybe an extra inch in shackle length, just wondering about the mount for the other end, might be able to make something up for there as well...

Making it legal and big in QLD is a tuff job by the sounds of it.

Rules are pretty harsh in Qld just depends on how hard you want to push it :D If you only go 1 inch longer on the shackle you won't have to touch the front mount.

But extending the spring mount on the other end of the shackle will still give it some extra height wouldn't it..?

Just dont know if that will affect how well it drives on road. I think modding that mount would be relatively easy, by memory, havent had the car for a week as its getting painted, and didnt think about it till after i sent it away.

Just think it might be a good one to get away with, if you make it look reasonably factory, then spray the chassis after doing it so one section doesnt look newer.

How about shock hoops, are they legal do you know. And body Lifts should be welded to chassis.

Extending the front mount will give a little more height, but because the mount will be longer it would be more likely to get hung up on when offroad.I don't think shock hoops are a problem it just depends on how you mount them to the chassis.
Probably best to talk to an engineer about it and see what you can and can't get away with and then make your mind up from there as to how far you want to mod it.

Swweeeet... You got any pics of yours on here mate...

I cant wait to get mine back from the panel shop, when I do i'll get some piccies up then, before and after.

I ended up getting it for $3500, clean truck, but he got ran off the road  , new guards, side indicators, radiator and windscreen and that was it, pretty cheap eh...

It will look shit hot, but I ain't scared of denting it, just this way the resell price should be sky high.

Thanks for the input guys, I was just chasing some ideas on what I should do to get me car flexing a bit, got some help to...

Do most you guys find it better modifying other springs to suit your cars, or buying a full set of gear from the shops.

The other option would be to go fully custom and pay thousands for it, but I DONT THINK SO TIM...

just modify other springs

off the shelf some times you can be lucky, your best bet would be to see a spring shop who the owner actually wheels them self
