Injector pump adjustments.

I have recently got my injector pump rebuilt with the new seals and stuff.But since doing it she blows heaps more smoke than before.I recently went on a 5 hr trip towing a trailer and when I got home the trailer was covered with diesel.I believe that they are supposed to set the pumps up before picking them up but I have heard of and adjustment screw on the bottom of the pump.I would like to know how far to turn it and which way would make it run leaner or richer if you follow me.It is a lock nut with a allen screw on it.

Firstly I would suggest having a word to those who rebuild it for you, and let them know of your concern.

How was it for fuel burn?? Better/ worse than other times towing?

Soot is normal behind any diesel, however the real test is the amount of black smoke coming out fully loaded.

After you have spoken to them, and assuming your not laying a smoke screen upon accelleration/ load, then we can go from there.

I have tried to contact the ones i got it off but they have either moved or closed down no go on the phone.I found my receipt and it says something about bench flowed and and I remember they said something about spool timing I think not sure.So I would really appreciate any help TRAINS with my pump.It blows smoke when pulling trailer or a boat heaps more than before i got it done.it actually gets abit embarrasing going up hills and stuff.But my main worry is getting nabbed by our boys in blue for excessive smoke as they are really cracking down on that here.So if you can help i would appreciate any help at all in adjusting this pump.It only blue a bit of smoke when really making her work nothing like it does now.

Had the same thing when i had my pump rebuilt (same motor).

The shop had set the pump for max flow ( and hence power), all they did was adjust the max velocity screw about 1/3rd turn.

Much happier after it... and they did it christmas eve eve after knock off time aswell!

Its all well and good fiddling with stuff yourself, but if something stuffs up, they might look it and say its been fiddled with and have no re-course, probably best to get some1 in the know to have a look.

Even if you go into another workshop, explain the problem they might even help you out for little or no cost.

Ok,
I will assume you know where the max fuel screw is on the top rear of the injector pump housing, just above the idle stop solenoid.

Remove the air hose and throttle linkage to give you more room to move.

Mark the top max fuel screw with a scribe, so you have a reference point.
To give you an idea, the engine from idle to max fuel is about 3 to 9cc of fuel going by memory, dzltek please correct me if im wrong.

Crack the 12mm lock nut, and turn the 6mm inner shaft out, ie anti clockwise 1 flat of the head.
Test drive for smoke. Best to load it up a hill, and follow it so you know what your looking at. Or the follower knows what he is looking at.

Small steps are best, you will be surprised at how little adjustments can make a difference in the smoke.

You may need to adjust your idle speed too if you go further.
Mark this too, before starting, so you have somewhere to go from there.

Can you see the max throttle stop adjustment screw is in a different position?
Ie, its got a different colour on part of the threads indicating it was in a different position.

if so, wind it back to limit throttle movement first, that may be all you need to do.

i had my pump rebuilt not long ago and the fuel upped aswell in my 2.8, well so the previous owner who fitted and tuned for me said anyways, and it blew smoke for the first week then went away. i was told if it keeps blowing smoke after the first week i will need injectos at the same time.. thought id share what i no. Cheers.

I have tried turning the fuel adjustment ANTI CLOCKWISE and so far hasnt made much of a difference gone not quite a 1/3 of a turn.How far can you turn it anti clockwise before it is too much.And it is definitely turning it ANTI CLOCKWISE is the correct direction looks like it is coming out with adjustments I thought this might be allowing more fuel thru instead of reducing amount.As with normal fuel adjustment screws from memory you screw them in to reduce and most are like a needle and seat set up if you follow.I know diesels are different but just thought I would ask and check..Hope to hear from you soon.

you'd really want a pyro guage installed before you start fiddling with this. cos if you overfuel you could really stuff your engine (melt pistons,etc?)

Also look at replacing the Governor diaphram and getting your injectors reco'd.. this should help reduce the amount of unburnt fuel (black smoke) your seeing now. if that doesnt work then have a look at adjusting your fuel is, you might loose some power though..

give me a yell if you need more info..

Who reinstalled the pump? was it timed by spill timing or other??
Yes it could be too much fuel, but more likely out of timing and too much right foot to keep it going....

Yes anti clockwise ie turning it out will "lean" it off.

Did you check the max throttle stop to see if it had been adjusted??
if so how far back did you adjust it before playing with the mixture screw??

to give you an idea, mates lux had his turned out more than 2 turns.
Patience is the key.
Hey if you wind it right out, it wont run till you adjust your idle speed up.


Looking at your max throttle position, and the idle position screws will show you if they have been adjusted by a cleaner thread shown.

I ended up adjusting the idle speed screw to where it "was", then wound out the mixture screw til the idle speed was acceptable, and then fine tuned from there.

I will try it tomorrow then the max throttle stop isnt even touching the throttle at all wide open never touched that before adjusting the mixture screw should I have done so.Took it for a run still got a constant black smoke even while normal driving not under load.The fuel mixture screw and the max throttle screw both had a wire seals on them I removed those before doing anything.

Yep, in my earlier post, I mentioned that the max throttle stop should be inspected first before getting creative with the mixture.

Can you see evidence on the threads that its been adjusted.
The colour tends to change over time on the exposed part of the threads, leaving a lighter colour on the threads that have been covered, and then uncovered by moving the small bolt body.

I think that makes sence dosent it.

Your idle speed adjusting screw may also have simmilar evidence.

Let us know.
The movement on the throttle shaft is not that much, pretty sus that it dosent have a max throttle setting set.

do the 2.4's have a governor diaphram? if they do would it be worth changing this or would you assume that would be part of a rebuild?

i know that when i had heaps of black smoke and replaced mine there were about 2 holes in it.. it cleared up quite a bit after replacing it.

I have touched nothing more than the mixture screw.the pump was a fully reco one so I am guessing that the diaphram would have been replaced.
As for the paint on the screws none at all it looks like it has ALL been chemically cleaned no paint at all on any of the screws to look at sorry.But yes the max throttle is WIDE open I will try adjusting it back in a bit then and try again.Probably just my luck to have had it done by a bodgy shop my luck runs out pretty quick.For if it was raining female parts mate i would end up with a bucket fulll of bum holes.SO I will adjust the max throttle back so it is not quite fully open then.I will put the mixture back to where it was and try again.See what happens.I was alittle concerned when one of the posts said I could melt pistons that I cannot afford to do.
But still grateful for all advice.

it will give you an idea of the angle or arc from min to max.
will help you set it up better.

I adjusted the fuel mixture about 3/4 of a turn and no more excessive smoke had to bring idle up as ststed but all is fine took it on a 12 hr round trip and no smoke.
I would like to thank all who gave me the info especially trains but thanks to all who helped out.

Loss of power

I think I have noticed a small drop in power but to have it evened out by no more smoke and getting nabbed by boys in blue and stuff it is a small price to pay.
Again I can only thank you for your help if I was closer mate i would buy you a couple of rounds at the local trains thanks mate.I just seem to get one prob sorted and another one pops up got electrical worries but that is another story another time.
