Which is better to have: split rims or sunraysias

Post by Guy From Nowhere »

Well, I am selling up some stuff as I need to get the place tidy. However, I am undecided as to whether I should keep my set of standard landcruiser split rims or my spare set of 31" remingtons on black sunraysias. I want to know which would be of more value to have. Both in the sense of how much they are worth in dollars and the advantages.

If you can help me decide please do so!

Cheers

i voted splitties coz trackside tyre changes are easier on them, partcularly if you dont have the right tools.

altho sunnies can fit wider tyres...

splits for outback travel are easier and you can get 12 ply or better tires easier in 750x16 also easier to change.. dont think you will get much for splittys though if you sell..

I understand I would get more money selling the 31" sunraysias, I guess I really want to know whether I am better of having a split rim set (considering I have 35" on sunnys already) or the 31"s as a spare set?

My vote goes for the sunnies. Split rims are ugly and make a 4WD look like a farmers truck.

The only place a split rim should be found is at the bottom of the ocean. :finger:

Rims

Post by stinger »

I use to think splits where the way to go as they were suppose to be easier to change.

However after changing a few a one piece rims I think they are almost as easy, once you get the technique. All you need is a bead breaker of some sort and a pair of tyre leavers the same as you need for a split rim.

One piece rims are lighter and have a greater range of tyre choices and sizes as well as no rim protector or tube to worry about.

So my vote goes for one piece rims these days for my 2c worth

I think no matter what you are doing sunny's or similar are much better. Basic tyre repairs can usually be acheived with out removing the rim from the car let alone having to take the tyre off the rim.
Tubes can be fitted if needed. Or just to hold the beads on nicer.

Based on the 19 votes, I think it is easy to say I will be keeping the Sunnie's for myself.

Thanks for the opinions peoples

The thing is you can get better tires on splits for outback touring. Search EO for a thread by Willem on STT's and how they lasted compared to his 'rags'/

You have to weigh up what you will do more of or have more chance of using...
