82 f50 issues.

Post by bigzuk »

Hey guys.

a mate of mine has a 82 f50 and has kinda destroyed his transfer case.

now we are after a cheap easy fix.

swap gearboxes?

change transfers?

rebuild transfer?

other options?

any help/advice is most appreciated.

or if anyone has any parts they'd donate/sell let me know.

cheers

john

Was there any particular problem with it, like it just for some reason is stuck in neutral, etc

or did it experience a major catastrophic failure with big crunching noises, etc

nup.

They changed a few things, someone here should know for sure but I think most if not all, as a complete unit, are interchangeable between year models. But gearing changed a fair bit, and the one's I have spare have vacuum operated 4x4, which might be a pita, whereas old school ones just have a lever.

Yeah if they are like the pics from RockyF70, then definitely time to get them replaced

If it is damage to gear similar to the top two pics I would also suggest looking for a local gear maker or even contacting your nearest TAFE that teaches fitting and machining. Teachers at TAFE are generally willing to knock a gear or two up at a pretty decent price (Just make sure they will heat treat it correctly too).

But if it is like his bottom pic, with the two rows of teeth. They wouldn't have a gear shaper that could do it.

If all else fails you can always Try 'Gear Makers' in Kirrawee (Sydney), you would have to post the gears up to them but it may end up cheaper than a whole replacement box.

Good luck with it....
