its all in the prep work, my ute has great paint but underneith must not of been prepared properly because its starting to bubble in a few spots & the paint would only be 14months old
So consider what your using it for first b4 spending big bucks
Anywhere around $500 for a comp truck would be resonable

my 2 cents, i am part way through painting a swb mq, bout $95 four 4 litres of acrylic, $60 for 2 litres of clear, $80 for 2 slabs, and say $50 for paper and filler.
havent put the clear on yet, gota get a new bonnet and tailgate, was turned onto a 2 pak clear, its gota be put on at least 24 hours after the last topcoat so it doesnt react, its a 3 part paint, clear, hardener and reducer(thinner) supposed to be alot more scratch resistant and give a better shine then acrylic clear, 90 bucks for enough to mix about 2 pots, let u no how it goes, but at the moment without clear it looks good, from a distance.

don't paint 2k over an acrylic within that short a period.....arcylic needs to have air contact to dry but 2k is chemically hardened.
2k is the only thing I would paint a 4by in as painting with acrylic is just a waste of time cause it isn't long lasting and scratched to easy.
2K is shiny off the gun and hard wearing to boot.
Done properly at home material is around the $700 mark for 2k primer and 2k top coat. That is what a full respray cost my brother in law for his bundy when I did it.

To do it properly, you'd need to strip the car down to how you've pictured.
How long did it take for you to do everything? Pull apart, paint, put together?
I'll probly never end up doing it still. So lazy

To do it properly you do need to strip it down but not this far......

There was quite a lot of work done to the bundy prior to painting......I did the same with a sierra 6 years ago and it still looks good after years of abuse.........Do it once but do it right and you won't have to do it again..
All I have to say is PREPERATION of the surface is the key.....do things half ar$ed and it will come to bite you within 12mths if not less.........
There was at least 4 days sanding in that Bundy prior to final coat.
All up took 5 weeks of weekends from start to finish......

2pak is not all its cracked up to be....and it will crack
2pak also uses heat to dry i.e oven. If painted outside it will take alot longer to cure. Acrylic is not as easy to spray as 2pak IMO but easier to touch up, and you will always scrarch your paint no matter what you use. Acrylic is cheaper then 2pak also.
True you should not paint 2pak over acrylic, you can though paint acrylic over 2pak.
A few of hundred and you have bought all the acrylic you will need.
This is just my opinion, which is a very good opinion

2 pack dries by chemical reaction with the hardener you put in with it. Force drying 2 pack is only done because no panel shop has the room or the time to leave 10 cars to dry so we bake them for 30 minutes to tack them off enough to unmask them, put them together etc. It's also to toxic to spray outside of a booth on a regualr basis. 2 pack is actually fully dry in 7 days but acrylic actually takes 6 weeks.
2 pack wont crack if you know how to use it. The reason it's cracking is because of the prep work and the guy putting it on. Acrylic is easy to use and anyone can use it to an extent anyway.
Personly I would recomend you paint it in 2 pack which is whats on the GQs from factory anyway. Depending on the quality of the paint you use and wheather your respraying the whole thing the paint and materials (people always forget about that bit) your looking at about $1000. By materials I mean, tape, brush on sealer, urathane, bog, sand paper, wax & grease remover. Theres about $200 there alone.
If your paying someone to do the whole bog, prime and paint in a shop expect to pay $2000 to $3000 atleast.
Cheers Mick.
lets just say never get family to do favors fo you cost a little more than expected

Actually this is the quote i got for paint only on a landcruiser ute. I've got quotes from virtually every painter/panelbeater in ipswich. I asked them to quote on respraying only of a ute that will be supplied to them paintstripped and bogged/repair work done. All they have to do is lay down the colour and bake. The best quote was $3750 from a mob who do custom rebuilds and hotrods, the worst was $10 000 from a panelbeater. I had a quote from a beater that indicated $1500 for repair/stripping/bog work etc then 6500 for painting. So let me see, 1500 bucks for the hard bit which takes ages, and 6500 for 4 hours work and paint.
So the moral of the story is that you should give it a shot yourself because it seems that most panel beaters don't actually want to do the work because they can quote extraordinary amounts on insurance work and the insurance companies will pay it, so they quote huge amounts to do custom work do discourage you from asking them to do the work. At least that's what it seems like.
I know that there is some hours involved in prep and painting a car properly but you can't tell me there is something wrong with the discrepancy in quotes and quoting 10k to basically prepsol a pre-prepared car, paint, bake and call me to say it's done.

And i know there's plenty of panelbeaters/painters on here who have done custom work, so i'm not saying it's everyone. I would just prefer that if someone didn't really want to do the job they could just say so instead ofgetting me to drag my POS to their shop on a trailer for a quote that they don't want to do anyway.
If anyone wants custom work done by the way, go to bodyworks unlimited in ipswich. The guys there have always had time to chat and give suggestions, and their quote was the most reasonable. And i've seen some of the work they do and it's droooooolworthy. These guys are decent metalsmiths and have done some nice projects.
UPDATE - Came in this afternoon after spending the entire day doing prep work on my truck. I can't say how much i HATE sanding and bog work. Seriously dude, next time i'll pay someone to do it regardless of what it costs.
