The old boy has gone up north on a fishing trip. He got to about Mackey and seen the oil pressure drop away to nearly no pressure at idle but comes back up to just under normal pressure at highway revs (2500rpm).
At the moment he is at our family fishing hut just north of Bowen. He is going to take it into Ayr on Wednesday morning to get a mechanic to look at it.
Any ideas from anyone that has had the same problem, feed back would be great as it might save alot of hassle and money.
Cheers.

Common problem, to fix you can fit a longer plunger in the relief valve. $12 - $30 depending on where you get it from.
Or you can get a bit of dowl about 12mm, a bit of wet&dry and linish the bore a little.
They wear a lip in the bore which causes the plunger (piston looking thing with a spring up its ass) to jam opened or closed.
The other option is to order another timing case off toyota ($1400) and fit that. Not very economical tho.
The toyota manual lists something like 4psi minimum oil pressure at idle hot and 85psi at 3000rpm.

FSM claims for at least 4PSI and 36 - 85 PSI @ 2000 rpm ( normal operative temp )
Common BEB's issue in 1HD-T and 1HZ engine when you have hi oil press at idle ( engine cold ) and suddenly it drops at virtualy 0 when the engine reach the normal operative temp ..
Anycase as you see recomended check first the pulnger seems to be more easy and cheap than any other ..
P.S. did you have a mechanical gauge for oil press .?
