MK patrol compatible with MQ front diff?

Hi, ive got an MK (auto hubs) and was just wondering if i got myself an other front diff (with manual hubs) of an MQ, would it just be a straight swap over bolt in? would it matter what ratios it runs? (and what ratios do they run? both the MK and MQ at the front)

Is there anything i have missed? are the steering linkages the same? is the driveshaft bolt-up the same?

if anyone knows? please tell :)

Hell yeah the swap. All steering linkages are the same, the only difference might be the diff ratios but that should not be a problem as most of them are the same ratio 4.625:1

I did it to my mk when i destroyed a cv. Just as easy to swap whole diff

mines an 85model tb diesel, so that would be 4.88 ratio?? and ive just been told the other one comes out of a 2.8l petrol patrol. (MQ) so is that a 4.1.4.625?? (i dont know what year the other MQ was)

I knew that turbo model came out with a different ratio just could not recall what it was, My mk is sd33 and runs 4.6 ratio.
if you don't want to change the diff centers just chage the auto hubs for manual we just did some on a mq 2 days ago take about 30 if you take your time not hard....

Is it possible to use the ratio from my diff and stick it into the new one? or is that one hell of a hard job?

Yeah it's a pretty hard job. If it was the back yeah no probs thats very easy to do.
Like i said before just change the hubs over it's pretty easy to do and only takes bout 30 minutes and you need bugger all tools just pull one off at a time and you can't go wrong

just got word back, the bloke recons its 4.8 ratio. and recons 1 tyre rotation is 43/3 shaft rotations. How would that go? is that what iam looking for?

85 in Aus. should be marked somewhere with diff ratio right? If you really want to know pull the front cover off the diff and count the teeth. Done deal, you know.

Is the new front diff 4.8 ?
If so yeah that should be fine. From what i have read, the turbo model is a 4.8
If you pull the cover off the diff it should have the ratio stamped on the crown wheel, if you can't find it you just have to count the number if teeth on the crown wheel and pinion gear and divied, and that comes out with the ratio that center is

if you where to put a diff with a different ratio front to rear you would get diff whind up and you could break the diff or axle but that is only if the front hubs are turned in

right, I pretty much knew that. Us stupid guys though just count the number of teethes! :lol:

I thought in Aus. they stamped it on the vin plate somewhere? Maybe that started with GQ's though....?

as has been stated about us yanks, we only know what we read when it comes to most Patrols. Next to zero MQ/Mk's here, same for GQ's and less GU's. Read and learn! ;) :armsup:

ohkay, getting slightly lost here, whats the 26:6 i know 26/6 equals 4.33333, so what would 43/3 ratio?

6 is your pinion gear. Same in all diffs. 26 is the number of teeth on the ring gear. 28/6 is a 4.66 ratio, 29/6 is your 4.83 ratio.

i don't know where the person told you 43/3 came from i'm lost there to :? 43 in to 3 is 14.3 and i highly doubt that you have a ratio of that.
Just pull the cover off the diff and get your ratio from there

RMP&O yes you right the orignal diff ratio the car came out with is stamped on one of the plates i thing the drivers side or where your from i would say passanger side. I hope all this makes sense :D

I think he meant that for one turn of the tire, the drive shaft turn 34 and 3/4 turns... i guess.....

Just got word that old mates diff has 4.5 ratios, so i guess its a no go.

mine isnt printed on any plates.... all complience plates say nothing aboutdiff ratios...

Wow, just found mine, its got transaxle written next to it and goes:

FS5 W81A HG43

does that mean its 4.3:1 ratio?

and yep, its right near the front (drivers) headlight.

Well i bought that diff of ebay anyways, its got the manual hubs on it too (i think its the left over part of what Screwy got) anyways, it will be intresting to see what the actual ratios on that puppy are, fingers X'ed.

iam picking it up on wendsday.

(its also got 2 inch lifted leafs on it, maybe a bit nicer than mine, cos id recon mines sagged a bit (bout 1/2 inch) in the last few years.)

i guess the only way to check is on the crown, or count the teeth when i get it.

and Wish i had coils, just in case its not a straight swap, i might be callin on you for some info in regards to just swappin the hubs over :)


LOL, last time someone told me it would only take me 3 hrs to do the 2inch lift... 2 bloody days alter and a crapola lota sweat! :)

Sweeto :D it real is not to hard to change the hubs but fingers x and it should be right ratio.

Phew, just got back from picking up that diff/springs etc... nice blokes i picked it up from too. heaps of 4bys in thier front yard. Even helped me get it into the back of me car.


anyways, just quickly looking at it, its DEFINITIALLY a MK front end, its got the wide rubber neophere bushed in the eyes at the front of the springs. :)

so theyll slot straight in. (hope the ride height will be fine, if its too low, i might combo these newer leafs with my ironman ones.

anyways, its pissin down rain here outside, so iam gonna have a better look in the morning, and undo the crown plate to check on the ratio....

finger x'ed :)
straight swap would be soooo mucg easier, and maybe, just maybe, it wont pull to the left anymore.... but iam getting way ahead of myself here.

If ther springs don't sit high enough, Just rap them round a lamp post or similar and pull them round it with your winch. It's trial and error, Measure them to start, then pull them round hold them there for a while to give the springs a memory then measure again i did it to my spring standard diesel springs (crap) and it sit not to bad they settled a bit but there crap springs after market reset much better give that a go works a treat and its cheap :D

now, if my understanding is correct, this is a 4.625

soooo.... Damm... i guess that aint gonna fly...

Wow, another problem, the hubs on the new diff pull off realy easy, but i cant get the damm auto hubs off my diff thats under the car atm. Ive got the allen key and have been at it with a hammer, but i feel if i go any harder, ill either destroy the bolt(snap) or ill burr the inside of the hex.

man.... this sucks....

is it possible to swap the rotors without pulling the locking hubs off? if so, id proberly prefer to give that a shot...

this is nuts.

think a was going about it the wrong way and allen keys are not the way, used my ratchet with hex bolt and yeah, it was tough, but there loose :)

Ohkay, iam a littlebit lost....

ive dismanteled both hubs, up to the point where on the manual one, there is a huge nut, probelry the one that holds the hubs onto the axel. and on the auto one, theres also a huge retainer, but it dont look like a nut,(has spring clip)...

just wondering how far i have to dismantle this to swap it over, does that big nut from the manual have to go onto my automatic one, ie, do i dismantle it as far as i can pull the wheel off the car while still bolted on the rotor?

help would be a good thing :)

kay, so ive got those retainers off and got the nuts off, transferred those to mine, how tight does the nut have to go back on? and then how tight does the locknut on top of that have to go on?


Well.... read a bit on an old thread. The first nut as tight as posss then back 1/4 turn, and the outer one as tight as possible.
well, ive got one side done...

regreased the bearings too while i wos there.

should there be any play at all if you move the tire from top to bottom? theres none in mine.. hope thats a good thing. :)

anyways, tomorrow the other....

Sounds like you got it nutted out ......... Yeah that right you should have no movement top to bottom or in or out and the wheel should spin easy ie. Not feel like it's dragging to much if that makes any sense :)

Wow.. finished!!! took me a while , but its done, test drove it also, and goes into 4x4 no worries! i gotta add, the left hand side sure was a little dry, but have repacked that also with grease.

Thanks for the help Wish I had coils, wouldent have done it without you edging me on :)
