Turbo squeal

Post by bucko »

Hey,

Was on my way to the shops today and planted my foot in 3rd only to hear some damn awful noise. Its a very loud turbo squeal when under load. I'm getting no boost pressure on the gauge, no turbo lights are coming on, and lacking power.

Any ideas whats up with it before I take it to the experts? Is it safe to drive for a day or two if I’m easy with it?

Thanks, Bucko.

Sounds like it may have split a silicon joiner hose. Check all the hoses from the turbo to the manifold.

check the easy stuff first. (what ruff said) then if nothing amis there, pull the intake hose off the turbo intake and grab the comp wheel nut and see if you can pull push it axially and if there is any movement the thrust bearing is worn and this allows the comp wheel to 'suck' itself into the comp cover when trying to boost, this uasually makes a hell of a noise and slows the comp wheel down.. if you stopped doing it when you heard then rebuild kit and some time will see it fixed ( ensure the relationship between the exhaust and compressor wheels are maintained or youwil have to balance it again.

rebuld kit for garret is about 120 for toyouta ct20/26 is about 180 ouch!! time to look at a turbo upgrate to a t28 etc. :)

hope that helps.

I just spoke with Mike. Problem is a broken turbine wheel, being rebuilt with Garrat parts. Oh what a feeling!

Ouch...belts would have been easier to fix  on the bright side, things could have been alot worse if bits got jammed in the combustion zone.
