power steer pump

i rebuilt the nissan power steering pump, and put it back in but seems to extremly noisey when turning the wheels,
not just that but at 1200 to 1500 rpm my power steering only works propper at idle its so heavey ya cant move the 33s

i did put it up on stands and moved full lock side to side and took the lid off the pump juist found it to do nothing


any ideas? please

If it is rebuilt properly I'd say that u still have air in system.

i just did this , seen no foam started truck turned wheels slowley turn off truck no foam while truck was off turns wheesl left and right re started truck gave the bleeder a crack did this a 5-6 times,

i put truck down again at idle steering wheel weight a ton couldnt move it put the revs up a touch the wheel then moved bot it was a noisy
any other ideas

are you bleeding it with the engine running?
are the hoses hooked up correctly?
runnin out of ideas mate, should be pretty straight forward but sounds like u got a bigger problem.

if the hoses are hooked up the wrong way the wheel will turn itself. maybe whoever rebuilt it has muffed it or changed the working pressure so ull need a new smaller pulley to turn the pump at the required RPM to pressurise.

yes i bleeding it with engin running other wise if it not running its not pushing fluid around hey and no air bubbles ar4e goi8ng any where

before i pullede it apart was working fine just leaking like a sive

i pulled everything out cleaned it up put in the new seals and put everything back as it came out ,

i'll have a play around with the hight pressure hose see how it gose

Seeing as i was the only one to respond to your previous thread in nissan section i guess this cheap shot was aimed at me.

Was going to PM but thought some others could use a lesson as well.

Some people are busy working, drinking, etc . Be gratefull that you get a reply at all as we are all here voluntarilly and offer advice no matter how brief, full eplanation, cheap trick, proper way, legal, illeagal , etc.

The wealth of knowledge on this forum is amazing and many people only visit this site when they can, and often dont have time to full respond or even reply. Quite often many question can be answered by looking in a workshop manual or searching the well composed bibles. Mine manual sits above me here, IF i have time/feel like, it ill look something up and help out, But we all know we should have our own

You are another person to whom i wont be helping anymore. Im sure people often overlook my threads due to me geting Drunk occasionally and becoming a bit of a smart ass, But i dont complain if im after tech and dont get a response that works.

Actually i couldnt help myself, I was thinking while i was having a dump.

Perhaps your seals started leking cause the shaft bush and/or shaft has worn excessive, then when the pump ran dry, it made it even worse.

So, when you do a step by step rebuild, it is noisy,etc due to excessive tolerances and the seals hold up well cause they are still new and havent streched yet.

The old farilane power steer pump were noisy after a while and im pretty sure displayed similiar problems, esp when at full lock.

Yes i have done a pump rebuild, and didnt replace the shaft bush and yes it was noisy but still wokred okay and didnt leak. BUt the bush and shaft was definatly worn. That pump is still going 2 years later.

Now im off to work. Itll be about 36 hours awake with about 2 hrs sleep with only 5 hours and half a bottle of jack before that. Why, cause i want to see my kids, but need to have an income as well.

when you rebuilt the pump, did you put the vanes back in the rotor the right way? they will have one square edge and one very slightly rounded edge and if you have never done it before it is easy to get some or all of them in upside down, which will make the pump noisy and inefficient. did you put the rotor in upside down? this may or may not make a difference. are the end plates perfectly square and sliding in the housing? if not, you will not have proper side contact on the vanes and the pump will be noisy and grossly inefficient. is it a belt driven pump, and if so, is the belt too tight, causing misalignment in the pump? did you replace the bearing(s) in the pump? whether yes or no, did you damage the bearings on installation? did you put the pressure relief valve spool back in the right way? did you put the cam ring back in the same way it came out?

for a simple little machine, power steering pumps have a lot that can go wrong with them, and most of that will happen when the pump is disassembled and reassembled, no matter how careful you are, sometimes one or more of these things can and do go wrong, and most if not all of these problems might cause the symptoms you describe.

all the above is generic and should apply to MOST power steer pumps; I am not that familiar with the nissan pump and can't remember if it has all of the construction described, but most or all should apply.

I would take the belt off (assuming belt driven?) and turn the pump by hand, it should be smooth to turn, with some resistance, easy to turn slowly and harder to turn if you try and turn it faster. you should feel no jerkiness or catching when you turn it by hand. if it is smooth, try it again with less belt tension. if it is in any way rough or ratchety, take it out and pull it down again, look carefully at the vanes, rotor, cam ring and end plates for uneven wear marks or other telltales. if it all looks good, put it back together carefully and try again.

you'll get to love the smell of Dexron on your hands.
