gq 4.2 into gu 2.8

Post by badger »

ok i have done a search and didnt find exactly what im looking for.

i have a gq 4.2 with after market turbo, a modded gu4 pump, and modded inectors. it goes realy well and owes me little coin. but the gq being an 88 model needs a fair bit of coin spent on paint and interior to make it look nice and keep the missus happy.

mate of a mate blew up his 2.8 gu and i think i can get it for a song.
if i use my motor and box what other mods are needed to bolt it in?
can i use the gq tail shafts etc as im lead to beleive the 2.8 ones are different to 4.2's

if its an easy enough swap i will just throw my suspension motor and other bit into the gu and part the gq for enough to put bar work n a few more mods on the gu

can anyone gimme some deinate answers?

I've been told they bolt in as I was looking at doing the same thing.

My problem was polution systems.

Could be wrong though.

I beleive the pinions are different on the 2.8 GU diffs, apparently much smaller, but I have been "told" that they are a straight swap.

The motor does go in, i believe you can use the same tail shafts.

However there was guy on here from sydney that did the conversion just do a search you should be able to find it. As they fitted a gq 4.2 diesel to there 2.8 GU.

me and my old man done this to his RD28 GU,

there is a tread some where, but to give you an idea,

-you need to use a GU gearbox as the shifter locations are different,
-you also need a GU TD42 gear box crossmember, as there is a difference,
-the TD42 t speed box is actually shorter than the RD28 box, we used our transfer case off the RD28 as we had rockhoppers fitted, all transfers mounting are the same, althou there is a minor difference in oil seal for transfer input shaft, if different swap the over,
-front dirve shaft needs to be trimmed approx 30mm,
-left engine mount bolts up, RD28 use a 2 bolt engine mount like early TD42 GQ's, we are still using there, the right hand enginemount needs to be moved on the cassis rail or custom off the block
- radiator is different, we were due for a new one so we bought the right one, or get yours moded,
- wring,
- we used the GQ powersteer pump, no probs, gq AC compressor,
modify heater hoses, air intake,

thats about all i can think of at the moment, ours passed engineeres no ptroblems

6 cylinder nissan swap for 6 cylinder nissan, bolt in, get transport to certify your engine change (bolt in) they check the numbers and add them to your rego, jobs done

search for threads by ozy1 and you get some good info.
Could even be in the bible already under engine swaps?

damn the whole having to get another box etc is a pain.

ozy would there be firewall clearance issues if u bolted the box straight to the 2.8 crossmember and shifted the engine back to suit?

is there any possibility you could upload some pics aswell?

cheers, keep the info coming

i lost all the pics when my last phone died, as they were in it,

but if i remember correctly if you used the 2.8 cross member, both engine mounts had to be modified, and it would sit real close ifnot touch the firewall,

im fairly sure the GU and GQ cross members are the same, as the chassis is the same at the mounting point,

it also needs to be engineered for the engine mount mod but we had ours all detailed in the paperwork for our own benefit, and has come in handy with the cops on one occasion,

the one thing i love when this topic comes up is te fact evryone has been told its a bolt in job, i only wish it was that simple, some things we were told before we took on the job were:
1- left hand engine mount needs to be modified,
We infact found we needed to modify the right hand engine mount,

2- GQ and GU TD42 gear boxes are interchangable and simple bolt in,
this is incorrect, the shifter loacations are different, a GQ box in a GU puts the shifter under the heater box,

3- fan shrouds are definately different as well, so you need a TD42 one to suit TD42 radiator,

ill think of others later,

anyone kno if a gq td42 radiator is the same or similar to a gu td42 one?

and how i would go with compliance using a 88 model motor. it has got a gu pump with aneroid one it, but im unsure if it would actually pass emissions if it was tested as the pump is very modified........... perhapse id i had it detuned it may

radiators are different, GU ones are wider mounts are different, hoses are different also,

we used a 93 model motor, we didnt tell the engineer the year it was from and he didnt ask, we just told him it was a TD42 and he was happy, we just had to pass noise tests, didnt have to do emissions,

i didnt think a gu chassis was the same as gq?
and as far as i know there is extra bracing etc on the gu chassis.

by the sound of the mods required i could have the motor in and running in less than 2 weekends
