Front suspension problem
Front suspension problem
Does anyone know how to stop my front suspension from bouncing up after it has been airborne and landed ? I have OME coils and OME LTR shocks ,all are new so I would expect the shocks should control this ,but they dont.I noticed a few OBC Nissan's had the same problem .Mine is a SWB GQ with TD42 engine,all std except for the GU front axle.Should I replace the LTR's or just go dual shocks ?

Front axle bounce is a result of compression on the springs and the shocks inability/(wrong valving) to control the rate of rebound. To control this rebound, dampning needs to be tweeked up. This can be down by either custom shim packs on the shock piston(slowing the rate oil moves thru the pack) or you could look at going to a bypass shock or maybe a twin set up will help control the bedound rate.
I'm no expert on shim stacks and valving in shocks , but have had a lot of work done with moto cross suspension, and had it all laided out in front of me and discribed.

The spring and shock will be matched, for 90% of genral use ( say corigations(sp)- touring, sand runs and genral 4x4 operation). but at the level your asking it to perform its starting to get out of its specification. Are you running normal GQ rubber bump stops?? this is going to add to the rebound energy the shock has to try and control after a jump. LTR are a great shock IMO, but if you keen on jumping, whilst maintain controlability etc I think you will find you may have to go to a twin shock system. You may also have to look into laminating the front diff housing to help strength it.
ps I had koni scania truck shocks on the front of my GQ, and these jumped fine, with no rebound bounce. I'm selling those now as I have something nicer

To reduce the pogo effect put in a dual shock setup and look into some hydruallic bump stops from King (not the fox units) Seen a few break.
Since you have LTR's you could just put in an OME single shock you will be surprised or a koni work best. Not sure on which way it goes but one gives go rebound and the other better compression.
Or to be honest speak to cass jones from WA australia, hes setups alot of comp trucks that compete in the obc and maybe it would be best if you put some King Smoothie Shocks in there with bumps stops. (more money) but spending once the first time.

id look at the suspension setup itself before shelling out coin for new shocks etc as the ltr's are a pretty good shock.
even a set of 80 series bumpstops or anything more linear than standard patrol bumpstops will help you here, if you have lifted your car space them down too so that they dampen the load even a few inches before full compression.
also look at front arm angles if you are running lift with castor plates or castor bushes the arm angle will also cause bad rebound characteristics.
get some drop boxes or arms.
then look to different shocks etc. but remember shocks that like jumping may not be the most comfortable or the best for wheel travel either.
where as the other mods mentioned will also improve the car in those aspects too
