Power steer cooler

Post by Willy Hilux »

I'm after a cooler for my power steering. It has 1/2" return line. The ones I found at the wreckers are all 3/8 fittings. Anybody know of one with 1/2" barb fittings?

I used an auto trans cooler for mine, I know supercheap have Davies Craig coolers... worth a look.

** After looking on thier website, every cooler they have is 3/8" fitting.
You may need an adapter to step down the hose size, or change the actual fittings on the unit.

Here is what I use. It is a PWR tranny cooler, its the biggest one they make. It cost $118 from Repco. This was easy for me to fit as I ran a rear mounted radiator.

Very few trans coolers have 1/2" lines as the ATF is very thin especially when hot.
Most vehicles run 3/8" lines and quite a lot even smaller as the fluid is pumped around the cooling circuit pretty rapidly.
My humvee only has 3/8 lines for the trans and 5/16 for the power steering circuit even though the brakes and the engine fan both use the power steering fluid to operate.

Just make some reducers at work while your getting paid for it,
thats how i make all my parts.Nothing better than getting paid to work on your own truck.
coolers are 100 bucks at super cheap for alloy davis craig one but their all 10mm lines.

cheapest way out, get an air con condenser from a small car or 4x4,it will already have a thermo fan mounted on it, take it to a radiator shop,& get them to mount new inlet & outlet pipes at whatever size you need..
I run a commadore one for my auto & somthing like a daihatsu 2wd would do for power steer, then for the radiator I use a ford AU & twin thermo shroud
tray mounted

A cheapie option is a trans cooler of a magna - around $15 from a do it yourself wrecker. Stock, the fittings are non standard but theres enough metal in the connections to tap them out.

Just ensure to clean the cooler out after you have modified it.

May not be for you but its not a bad cooler, it works and is cheap.
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

I've got one like that but much larger. I'm going to fit that one and reduce the hose down to 3/8" for the return.

Thanx for the replies.

Whats the best way to attach it to the radiator. I was thinking of using stainless steel cable ties.

Remember the alum it's really weak .. I get some issued with my AC condensator and my fan for this reason .. so you can use some sort of rubber isolator and much rate with ties .. ( I prefeer plastic ones )
