How many splines does my Rangie have on the axles at the diff end? It is a 1992 Classic.

Can't remember the year of swap in the late classics :oops:

If it has a rubber cap in the middle of the axle flange its 24 spline, if its just a hump with the centreing drilling in it, its 10 spline

Based on this link, I'm guessing it will be 10 spline. The Disco's went to 24 spline in about 1994 also.

What size tyres are you planning to run?

If you are looking at upgrades, options include:

Fitting a Salisbury (Dana 60) rear from a defender (still only 24-spline, but can go up to 35-spline 1.5" without too much difficulty) - 9.75" diff centre.

Modding the existing housings to take toyota 200 mm (8") centres with custom axles.

Swapping the complete axles for 80 series or GU/GQ.

If you do a search you should find plenty of info on each.

Inititally I am planning on 33's while we develop this 4in kit, and once we are happy with that I plan to go to GQ front and 80 rear with custom links. So Im not real keen to spend much on the rangie diffs, was just curious to know what was inside them.
I wont be doing anything silly on the rangie diffs anyway, was thinking I could just slip some CroMo CV's and axles in to get me through the development phase.

You'll probably break 10 spline axles first. If you change to 24 spline you could break the axle or the diff centre. CroMo CV's may be a bit of overkill unless you're locked

In stock form your rear diff centre is your weak point, followed by the rear (10-spline) shafts. You shouldn't ever break anything in the front if you are unlocked on 33's (except maybe a diff if you land with a wheel spinning).

Sure you'll get people driving on 33's and the standard gear lasting, but if you have a habit of being a little hard on your stuff............BANG :D

I have broken all the Rover stuff on 30" BFG All Terrain ( a rear diff....while unlocked)....and on 32" ( 1 front axles, 2 CV's, 2 rear axles ) I have a disco so it is 24 spline axle.

Since you are unlocked you ll be border line....as long you keep a controlled right foot....but you know it is hard when you are out it ishard to be so limited....

I upgraded now to the Toy Swap with 30 splines front and rear and the 36.5" ET II....it is rock solid so far been out many times locked front and rear and pushing it..

My 4BD1T has enough twist to spin the back wheels in 2nd gear on tarmac. How long are the diffs and axles going to last with this sort of carry-on?
Standard size wheels, 1170kg rear axle, 1130kg front axle. Empty.

How long is a piece of string? IME though, on-road / high range work is a lot easier on the drivetrain than low-range stuff offroad (even when you are being silly ;) ).

Snatch-recoveries offroad (when you are the recovery vehicle) seem to be a good way to kill rear diffs.
