RUFF wrote:No there will be recovery vehicles if needed but usually with Glens courses there is always somewhere to back, back out of or get around an obstical. From memory a winch is a DNF.
no winching. winchs don't drive 4wds. people do. tracks are set to allow for recovery and we do have vehicles ready for recovery when needed.

Im keen to start competing thats all, dont have a winch.
I have all requirements of standard class, but I have a shortened tray on my lux......
Is that still ok?
What about gearing, ie/ rockhopper gear sets etc its not mentioned in standard class.
Also, do I need to be a member of a Club etc?
Cheers
The Tonka mobile might just make an appearance.

gear ratio in standard class is really no advantage. the tracks are set to cater for a broad range of vehicle, for example, a track is generally about 200 to 300 mtrs long and may have any of the following included, drop off ledge of up to 5mtr nearing vertical followed closely by a near vertical climb of up to 8mtrs, in this you will need to have taller gears and momentum to clear this on the first attempt. there may be rocks or log in the bottom of a large hole were the vehicle is on a severe side angle this you will need to have a good spoter to finish, this is just a small part of a track that will take up to 15 min to finish. the modified tracks are not the same tracks as used for the standards for this reason, each category has tracks to suit vehicle ability. the gorge track at black duck valley is used only for modified and takes most vehicles about 12 min to complete, this same track is not used for open modified, TJpete tried to drive this track and could not finish, he made it only to the half way mark and his jeep had to be recovered. so you see there is a lot of thought put into the design of tracks for each category,
there is no time limit on the tracks but you may not stop without penalty, the challenge is to be able to finish the track with the lowest penalty count and when the drivers see what conforns them in each track the pressure is really on. all of the tracks are driven proir to any event it is pointless seting a track that can't be completed.

CHEESY your mav could enter modified if you were to run 35" tyres. having said that, your wheel base would have an advantage in areas of the comp tracks and areas that would not be to your liking, this is because we have to cater for long and short cars and show no advantage for either, this is were the challenge comes in. your car would go well in the first 3 off 5 tracks because of the way your truck is set up but you may struggle with the last 2 being generally fairly steep in nature , more to suit a truck which is long.
the mav is one of the best set up trucks i have seen and you certainly can drive the thing. the point of modified is to have vehicles that can be driven on road legally and can be driven in comps successfully. we all know these cars are driven daily and are generally well set up for competitions.
open modified is a little differant in that we still want the vehicles to resemble the road going models but with sound engineering to make them a step above the rest along with those who build and drive them.
we make no secret of this.
the mav could enter either cat but would be more suited to open modified.
i hope this makes sense
glen
I thought modified maybe a little down the food chain for your rig, it is good to let people know about the comp because it's very differant to all the others, Steve Hobbs was looking at running something like this in VIC but he probably needs to see how it works first, he may be up in march for the first round. the good think about the short course is the fact that innsurrance is not a problem due to the lack of timed events and no winching. Mention time or winching and innsurrance goes through the roof.
