Any Gearbox experts?
Any Gearbox experts?
Guys i did my clutch again this week so I dropped the box changed it over bolted it up and ran into a prob......
When I dropped the box I had to pull of the gear lever to give me more room under to move it around, now i didn't take of the top plate i pulled out the circlip at the base of the gear lever and pulled out the whole assembly, so the lever the pivot point and the ball on the bottom all as one.
Now I fit the box back up bolt it in etc just like the times before, but now when I put the gear lever back in its not right. If i for example push the clutch in and put it into 1st or any gear for that matter, then while still holding the clutch in let go of the lever it goes back to neutral.
Its weird because when you put it in gear in the past you get that solid click feel that lets you know its in, now I don't, i could push it in with little finger no click no lock feeling...nothing.....
While the car is under load either on accel or decel (overrun) it will stay in gear no probs.....if its coasting with no load just pops back into neutral. I can still select all gears no forcing grinding etc, now I don't know if there is a detent spring or something that has fallen out, or more importantly fallen in lol but im out of ideas. Incidentally it does have a spring on the lever assembly but from what I can see it just pushes the lever against the circlip to keep it tight, appears to have nothing to do with the workings of the box.
Nissan mechanic was no help he never heard of it, gearbox places had the same answer so I have come looking to you guys as I have not come across this in the 12 years I have been doing cars....
Any ideas, a couple of threads on this topic on here but not the same thing as my lever was removed and upon re fitting the issue occurred....what have I missed.
Its the RB30 powered model so they use the gearbox much like the 300zx, not the 4.2 families box.
Thanks in advance guys
Danny

Yer the box was more of a 3spd rather than a 5 spd.
it would leak all the oil out if 5th was used.
2nd was hard to find. But once confirmed locked in. Could be really abused. Just couldn't find it very often.
1&3 it would pop out of when not under load. Or if shock loaded it would throw the lever out of the slot.
Was about to be replaced and I killed it.
As for you problem. Maybe have a quick check of some other nissan forums with 300zx on them/in them. As the box is the same as a 300zx.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
Sounds like the shift rod that the Gear shift lever drops into might not have been centered.. The shift rod connects up with the H gate in the transmission top cover. It rotates clockwise and anticlockwise then foward and backwards to shift the required gears. The plastic bush on the bottom of the gearstick engages into a bracket on the end of the shift rod.

I wish it was just centering, but i can engage all gears fine, lever is in right position for all of them. Problem is it has no click into gear anymore its just loose and falls out if not under load..........
I just cant work it out, in the morning im pulling out the top plate with lever attached and checking it like that...

Pulled the top plate of complete nothing is broken or missing, i can put my finger in the selector inside the box and change gears.....Something inside the box has shit itself.........but must be somehow related to the removal and re fit I just cant work out how something could fall out.....

As woop mentioned, my first thoughts are the little plastic bush being either missing or not attached to ball on end of stick properly

This is what i believe it is but couldn't see it from the top plate at least not from the angle i was on through the hole in the floor....The cup and ball are all there and fine like i said I can still shift it with my little finger when the lever is removed there is absouloutley noooooooooo grab.
How could detent springs go missing removing the lever its a non attached part!!

Thanks champ, im gonna get the book soon so I have all the torque settings etc and for moments like this, but i have since worked out its not the lever but deeper inside, the best bit is the detent springs need the box pulled to reinstall!!!

And you've just had it out and in to do the clutch. You poor bugger. That's a job i've done ONCE and hope it stays that way.

when u put my new engine in, i found that under no load it wanted to keep poping outa gear. i took the boot off and found that it was just that the cup that screws onto the box hadnt been done up properly(this is what happens when you get help from ppl who have no clue). all i had to do was tighten the cup up properly and it was fine...
it had been put on tight, but there was a little plug in the side of the thread that had to be pushed in so that it could then be screwed on over the top of the plug and right to the bottom of the thread. so just check that the cone is right down over ALL the thread...

Cup has nothing to do with it, with shifter removed I can change gears with the small finger on the selector rod, there is no locking mechanism.....I have the diagram now so I know which one it is Ill pull it out next day or 2 and have a look again, thanks again mate.macca81 wrote:when u put my new engine in, i found that under no load it wanted to keep poping outa gear. i took the boot off and found that it was just that the cup that screws onto the box hadnt been done up properly(this is what happens when you get help from ppl who have no clue). all i had to do was tighten the cup up properly and it was fine...

This is the bit i was looking for :
And from memory that bolt is accessible from outside the box....Providing its the same one up near the wiring bracket......So this is what i'm going with this week.
Oh yeah heres a pic for fun this is my 3rd clutch since april lol, i have promised myself no more racing on this one and so far I haven't.

Bilby I owe you a drink or 2 if your ever near by, all fixed boys the ball bearing had somehow fallen into the box......I have cut down a hardened stainless pin and used that as a replacement its tight now like a new box.
Thanks again champ.
