Some PTO questions (MQ/MK/Cabstar)

Post by (EST)MahviaDeTyrk »

Hi

Doe's anybody know MQ/MK PTO gear ratios ?
I know PTO's are different for different gearboxes, are the PTO ratios same ?
I have bought '86 Cabstar gearbox - but it's without PTO  (and I think it was only Cabstar in Estonia :P ) is there a possibility to use some type of Patrol gearbox PTO ?

yes you can use a Patrol PTO gear box. As long as it comes from the same generation Patrol as the Cabstar you should be fine. Meaning if you have an 86 Cabstar box get a PTO from a 1980-1987 160 series Patrol. What engine did the Cabstar have in it, ED33?

I put a PTO on my 1983 Patrol recently. It is super strong and pulls like a Mac truck. It is also a pretty fast winch considering....

I have a 86 Cabstar 5spd box going in my 83 Patrol very soon. It has a PTO box attached and is exactly the same as my other 160 series Patrol PTO boxes. Let me know if you want pics....

quick side topic(sorry to hijack), only needs a one post reply. does the cabstar gearbox just bolt into the mq? ie, straight onto the SD33 and the transfercase? or does it need modding in any way?

mine won't be in for another 1-2 months but from what I can tell you can't use the Cabstar bellhousing. I have a SD33T plate and 3 bellhousings here to make sure it will all go together. Main shaft on the tranny may be a touch long which means a bit of grinding/machining. Cabstars came with a variety of engines one of which was the ED33, a 4cyl. SD33. This during the 1980's. In the 1990's some have TD42's. I have seen plenty of other engines in them though so it all just depends I guess. The 5spd I have came from an 86 Cabstar with ED33, PTO box on it was to run hydraulics or whatever but the box is stock. Both tranny and PTO box from the Cabstar I have are a near perfect match to the MQ/MK. I don't know much else about Cabstars other than some came with an Eaton auto tranny and manuals from 5spd & 6spd up to 10 or 12 speeds. I am talking 1980's and 1990's here. Lastly, a few Cabstar/Atlas out there are 4wd. Since the Cabstar box I have has the transfer bolted to it it must have been a 4wd truck. Not sure exactly as I bought the box from a wrecker in New Zealand and am going by what he told me. If you going for a Cabstar box with low 1st/2nd gear I can see this mod being worth the time. Otherwise why bother in Aus when MQ/MK 5spd are available cheap. I simply rang a wrecker in NZ and this is what I got! Didn't even know it had a PTO attached until it was here in the USA.

Marks 4wd prolly has more info on the Cabstar than most places I can think of. And Dellow makes kits to fit v8's to the Cabstar box. A ring to either may get you more info than I can give....

well after looking at some pics which I haven't looked at in awhile I am wrong about the PTO boxes. Cabstar is different than the MQ/MK. Similar but different...

Notice difference in bellhousings and also the "off-set" of the PTO box.

and here is one other thing to get you thinking! A GU TD42 clutch fits the Cabstar and MQ/MK boxes. Same spline count and diameter fits in the bellhousing. Just have to drill flywheel to suit. I am going to run a Safari Tough from a TD42 in my SD33/5spd. ;)

It Cabstar was with 2,5L disel (Model F22) - I think SD25 is the engine.
It was 2wd - now I must think how to bolt a T130A transfer case.

I know with and without turbo Patrol gearbox PTO's are different.
