welding

Post by Cruza62 »

Get lots of scrap.....LOTS OF "FREE" SCRAP, start with heavy stuff (10mm) and gradually go smaller. When arc-ing, I cheat (I heat the rod up with some sort of flame - then run the rod across a scrap piece to get the welder in a good mood). And then move straight from the scrap bit to the important bit whilst it's still in a good mood. Then if you want to try the tricky stuff (upside down) there are just a few little simple rules to follow - start by pushing up at it whilst moving. When welding vertical (arc only really good for thicker stuff ie 5mm up) draw small christmas trees whilst moving upwards.
From this you will find that the size of the rods you use, the thickness of the steel you are welding and the welder setting all determine how fast you move the stick. It doesn't come from reading a book - you have to keep practising until you get the knack.
PS start horizontal first and for beginning always weld towards you.
Ben.

Some nsw tafe courses before doing any of them you need to do

something that used to be called welding and thermal cutting i cant find it on the list though

these all used to be 4 modules each, it has been a long time since i did them though, doing it of a night you would get 4 modules done per year 1 night a week

17435 Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) - Statement of Attainment (NRT)

17436 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) - Statement of Attainment (NRT)
17434 Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW) - Statement of Attainment (NRT)

these are the presure ticket courses in nsw , you cannot just rock up and do these you have to have done the previous training and work hours to even get into the theory course,

NOTE
----
Students requiring welder certification against Australian Standard 1796 will
need to meet the entry requirements specified in Sections 2 & 3 of the standard.
It is essential the RTO teaching sections ensure these entry requirements are
met prior to enrolling students in either this Statement of Attainment 17431 or
the TAFE Plus Statement 17622 Assessment Program.

welding

Post by Cruza62 »

Hi,
I rescently found out that I can do a welding course that will certify me for structural welding or something. This can be in either mig/tig/arc and runs two nights a week at my local tafe. They just spent a whole heap of dough and bought heaps of Lincoln welders. The course I want to do is arc and it is apparently the equivalent to the old DLI certificate... (this is what the instructor said to me)
It runs for 18 months, two nights a week, one night theory and the other night prac.
Either way the tafe is Chisholm Institute in Dandenong, VIC.
Cheers Ben.
